I have one of these, it keeps water constantly hot so you don't have to wait for it to boil if you want tea/coffee

but the smug attitude from people who use kettles over people who use microwaves makes no fucking sense. It's hot water. Heat it up however you want, its not like using one method adds more flavor over another.

That's not exactly what he said.
He was talking about the phenomenon of water exceeding boiling temp when the container it is in lacks nucleation sites for bubbles to form.
Usually, impurities within the water itself is enough to provide nucleation sites, but if your water is distilled or being boiled for a second time, this problem can occur in very smooth containers like pyrex glass.
And easy fix is to leave a toothpick or chopstick in the water, or to use a less smooth container, (at work, I microwave my water in one of our paper hot-cups)

The anon you're responding to is talking about an electric kettle though. The kettle sits on top of a little baseplate that plugs into the wall, and powers the heating element inside the kettle. Heats water about as quickly as a microwave, and does not require a stove. They're pretty universal here in Canada.

You need to boil water in a kettle for the french press. wait for that or make sure you get back to the kettle on time. Then add coffee and the hot water and wait for it to brew or make sure you come back to it on time.
It's two separate waiting periods rather than just 1. And the brew never stops and the water needs to be poured off before it's gone too long.

It's just convenient. You put water in the kettle, hit the little switch, and walk away. It automatically turns off once the water starts boiling, and is pretty well insulated so the water stays hot in the kettle. With a microwave, I'd have to wait around to watch it boil or risk it boiling over. I also feel like the chances of burning yourself might be a tiny bit higher with an open container than with a kettle.
So no, it's not a big difference, just a few of the niceties you get when you buy something purpose-built. They're also quite cheap, and I don't own a microwave anyway, so I find them useful.

Old microwaves used to do this, I remember it being on the news quite often in the 80s. If the microwave emitters focused the microwaves in one spot and there was no turntable (or the focused spot was in the centre of the turntable) then pockets of the water could become superheated without boiling. Then, when you stir it, the superheated water boils instantly and you get a massive stream explosion. People have died.

Your argument is understandable, but as usual with chemistry, the real world is a fuckton more complex. Hes actually right that those salts would precipitate as you heat the water.
First consider that CO2 dissolves in water and reacts with it to form carbonic acid. This is an equilibrium process.
CO2(aq) + H2O ----> H2CO3(aq)
Concentration (think partial pressure) of CO2 is greater underground, which results in more dissolved CO2 and therefore lower pH.
CaCO3 ---> Ca2+ + CO32-
CO32- + H+ <----> HCO3-
Here calcium carbonate found underground dissolves in the water. Then the carbonate ion reacts with a proton to give bicarbonate. Calcium bicarb is much more soluble than calcium carbonate. So at higher pH lots of CaCO3 dissolves and is converted to bicarbonate by this equilibrium process.
Once the water comes out through the tap, it is exposed to much lower concentrations of CO2 than are found underground. Through another reaction carbonic acid decomposes to water and CO2.
H2CO3 <----> H2O + CO2
Since the atmospheric concentration of CO2 is now suddenly lower, by henrys law more CO2 will now come out of the solution and go back to the gas phase to respond to this change. This is called outgassing. As shown in the reaction above, CO2 outgassing will deplete the H+ source (carbonic acid). As H+ depletes, pH lowers and more bicarb is converted back to carbonate. Calcium carbonate, which has poor solubility in water, precipitates. Heating the water would make CO2 outgas faster and therefore cause precipitation of CaCO3 to increase. A similar pH dependent process happens with Mg(OH)2 which also causes it to precipitate at atmospheric CO2 levels. >>14837832 is misleading.

Not him but for basically any tea, brewing them in boiling water will make the tea way too fucking bitter. This is especially true for green tea, but it's true for oolong, white, and even black tea (which is better at 95 or 90).

The main exception is English style tea, which is so shitty that it's designed to be boiled to extract all the shittiness which is promptly hidden with milk and sugar. This is because, historically, tea kept on a ship for six months in wildly changing climates did not keep well. Ofc English tea is by far the most popular in the west so boiling for tea is generally what you want to do.

I make tea in two ways.

Method 1: Place tea in infuser, boil kettle, pour hot water into teapot. Let tea infuse for 1-2 mins. Pour tea. Drink tea.

Method 2: Place lots of tea in metal teapot with water. Boil and stew on the hob for any length of time. Pour/drink/reheat whenever tea is required.

This Americans don’t have kettles thing is the self hating coastal faghats trying to make us look bad.
I’m a Missouri mountain redneck, the epitome of flyover country hick... we use our electric kettle all the time. The 110v thing is not an issue, our kettle can have a full pot boiling in under three minutes. Not sure if they are faster in the UK, but three minutes is fast enough. If you only fill it to the minimum fill line for a single cup, it’s more like 80 seconds.

i live when euros try to make that sound like a issue while having no understanding of electricity, voltage is meaning less, amps are what matters. But as a east coaster no we do not have kettles, whats the point? if i'm just doing 1 cup i'll nuke it for 1min and if i need more i just boil a pot on the stove. What do you even need boiled water for besides tea or cooking which is done on the stove? those little wash cloths that expand when you put them in hot water?

Euro here, we only make it sound like an issue because that's what we've been told by Americans. I've never been to America, but whenever the kettle thing comes up a bunch of Americans say it's because of the voltage or something.
The point of a kettle is that it boils water WAY faster than using a pot, and the fact you don't get that does suggest that the electricity is an issue.

This. Many Americans having learnt about the fact that different teas need different steeping times and temperatures mindlessly bash the fact that Brits tend to use water at boiling point for Assam heavy black tea blends, ignoring the fact that this is actually how Indians, Sri Lankans, Cantonese and many other peoples brew their own tea. Hell, if they think the Brits steeping their tea at boiling point is absurd wait until they see Indians and Cantonese boiling it for about 15 minutes in large pots and other vessels.
