I can GUARANTEE that stove had been malfunctioning for WEEKS if not longer before that happened. The problem here isn't the gas appliance, it's "Operator error/neglect."
I've seen some of the most horrifying examples of this from working as a handyman. You'd be amazed how retarded some of these people are. I once had to replace all the screens in a house that the keeds thought it was great fun to jam their superhero dolls through,(one actually did it right AFTER I replaced it, then they "Mamma" unabashedly beat the shit outta the kid right in front of me,) but that's not the point of this story-- When I went into the bathroom,(the only window W/o screens,) the TOILET had had the entire front half of the bowl broken off of it and was literally taped back together and they were STILL USING IT. They hadn't even mentioned that in the work order, and they said it'd been like that when they moved in...4 months prior.
That means they'd just been letting it leak shit/piss water for MONTHS and just slapping extra dollar store packing tape on it when it was REALLY leaking.
These were not recent immigrants, one was going to school to be a health care worker, and one worked at some govt. office job like the DMV or something.
Chilling...
Just like us.

Resistive electrical elements have a noticeable lag.

This one advantage is usually offset by the "can set the house on fire" and the "oops, gas leak, suffocate and die" bits, so overall it's about the same.

We have a ceramic stove at home. I never cooked on a gas stove but all I can say is, that ceramic sucks. Sometimes it takes so fucking long to heat a pan up really hot and the temperature control fucking sucks.

Remind me - do you fiddle with the gas valves on the furnace or water heater to adjust the flame 3 or 4 times a day?

It's an irrational concern, sure, but furnaces and water heaters are pretty much automatic and hands-off, aside for some seasonal maintenance.
Stoves and ovens are hands-on.

Jesus christ the fucking anger and cope in that comment. I had an electric stove growing up and didn't know what the big deal was until I moved out to a place with gas. Holy shit, I had a Come To Jesus moment. It's SO much better. No warm up, instant reaction to changing temp, fast direct heat, and I can roast peppers on the burners. I felt like Prometheus had just handed me fire.

You do realize electric furnaces exist. Anything gas can do you can do with electric, and it's usually more efficient. The only advantage gas has is cost depending on where you live.

Home heating on electric is obscenely expensive around here.

Electric company made a special deal to new home construction; if electric baseboard heaters were installed instead of a (gas, LP, oil, whatever) furnace, they'd give a special rate. They lost their asses and rescinded the discount rate a few years later, and anyone stuck with one of those houses was pissed when their bill quadrupled.

I believe they also cancelled the special rate for electric water heaters wired to an off-peak circuit at the same time.

There is no way that sort of thing "just happens". It's not credible.

I'll bet they ignored "problems" with that stove for months, or moved it and pulled the gas line partly out of the wall or something like that. My mother's gas stove operated properly for over 40 years. Why? My father inspected it regularly to make sure it was in good order.

It's a stove, not a rocket ship. Maintenance is simple.

I like gas but there are aspects of modern electric ranges I like. The way they can sense the temp of the pans and adjust the heat to avoid scorching is handy for some things like making stovetop popcorn.
