Don't go to Charcoal Pit, the only good thing there anymore is their milkshakes. Get a cheesesteak from Pickles and Chips on Foulk Road or a burrito from El Diablo. Trolley Square in the city is where most of the decent restaurants and bars are and it's a decent area to walk around. If you're in town on a Friday/Saturday head up to Booths Corner, it's great people watching and there's some really good food counters there.

These guys definitely seem to know what's up locally, and if I get the opportunity, I would make some extra effort to try Dallesandro's.
But let me mention a point in favor of Pat's and Geno's: they are open 24/7, which is notable for someone on a road trip who may be "driving through" at three o'clock in the morning. (Whereas Dallesandro's closes between 9:00 and 11:00pm.) They're also located closer to I-95, helpful for folks headed to or coming from Baltimore/DC. That was my experience at Pat's, the one & only steak I've had in Philly itself. And it's still a nice memory.

Is Dallesandro's better? Sure; you Philly guys would obviously know best. But it doesn't really help to shit on tourists or the places that cater to them. It's just a different crowd. (I say as someone who once shat on tourists in another city to their faces and then felt bad about it later.) Just because something is not the best, doesn't make it objectively bad. And consider Pat's and Geno's as doing you a service by diverting the crowds of loud mugging tourists from your favorite local joints.

So OP, if you only get the chance to try meme Pat's or Geno's for whatever reason, enjoy it for what it is!

you're absolutely right about appreciating them for what they are, although i would push back on the proximity to I-95 point because joe's (as i said, my personal favorite) is less than a quarter mile off 95, although parking in fishtown (and the entire fucking city for that matter) is a gigantic pain in the ass.

sup OP, PA resident who lived outside of Philly for a couple of years. Most of the thread is correct in saying you should not get a steak from Pats or Gino's, both are trash and cook overpriced overhyped sandwiches with rubbery meat. The best cheesesteaks come from small pizza places. My favorite spot to go was a place called New Haven Pizza in downtown West Chester, PA, and my favorite way to have it was as a hoagie with lettuce, tomato and mayo (cuz' I'm from New England and that's how DiAngelos makes their steak sandwiches.) But yeah man find a hole in the wall and cop yourself a sandwich with onions and provolone, maybe get a wudder ice, maybe go to a hardcore show to mosh all that energy off afterwards and support the local scene.
