The crispy batter on fresh fish that isn't overcooked with just a bit of salt and pepper tastes very nice. If you like fish, it's a fantastic way to eat it.

The chips are just chunky fries. They can range from pretty good to absolutely shit depending on the quality of the place you're buying from. Ideal texture is crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. It's basically just deep fried potato and it can be pretty nice when done properly. Enjoy with salt as well.

Both can also be enjoyed with your favourite sauce of choice, and there's regional variences to what type of sauce you get.
Something that the UK has that I don't know if its popular in America is "brown sauce", which is a sweet, smoky, vinegary sauce with the same type of consistency as plain ketchup and that often gets eaten with Fish and Chips - but some people also just have plain vinegar.

It's okay food. Satisfies the person's with a simple palate, but it can easily turn in to dry or mushy stodge if you buy it from a generic city place since they're more like fast food. Flash fry with premade frozen ingredients and get it on a takeaway box ASAP.
The best Fish and Chips restaurants are usually ones from the coast which aren't fast food places, and usually the fish they use may as well be eaten as sashimi before it's cooked, that's how fresh it is.

The best fish I've ever had was when I was in Northern Scotland in a fishing village. They caught the fish almost minutes ago, prepared it in front of me, battered it and deep fried the fillet and served it up with lemon and fresh chips. The fish was very juicy and textureful - it's absolutely worth a try if you ever get a chance.
