If you got a porcelain one like the one in your picture, then it's useless as a grinder. You could use it as a small mixing bowl I guess.
Granite is generally what you want, but even granite ones can be shit at grinding if they're too smooth or light. You need a large one (about the size of your hand with the fingers splayed out) made of granite (or volcanic rock (really porous and maintenance heavy) and one with a heavy pestle.
I use mine to grinding peppercorns en masse when making pizza sauces which call for a lot of pepper, it's much more efficient than using a pepper mill to get say 3 tablespoons of pepper.
I also use it to crush certain spices like green cardamom when I'm making some chinese brines.
I haven't found more use for it yet, guacamole I suppose can be made but I'm not a huge fan of guacamole. I suppose hummus too, but you could use a food processor for that.

I've used em to make powdered charcoal, I've ground up pepper corns, salt rock, cloves, hot peppers I think I've even used it to grind weed.
The one I got is really heavy and made from what I think is lava rock.

Porcelain mortars are for apothecaries, not kitchens, unfortunately pharmacies where they mix various powders on the spot are no longer a thing since nearly a hundred years ago.

I got a Japanese one as a gift. It’s great for grinding sesame seeds, but I haven’t used it for anything else yet. Should I get a regular one for other spices and herbs?

These folk have a lot of them. I got my last one from a Thai guy in NYC, you can mail order them as well but they're heavy so you'll pay for shipping.

Put some cloves and cardamom pods in there, crush them lightly, then put them in a rice cooker and cook it. Most fragrant rice you'll ever have.
