Maybe try a different brand, there is a lot of variation.
Some tastes like plain yoghurt, some more like sour cream, and some tastes properly cheesy.

There will be slight variations between brands (probably due to bacteria cultures im sure) but it should be a savory flavor and not even sour. I usually stick to either 1% or 2%

Moisture content and the amount of whey can vary a lot, too. I've seen some brands that are absolutely soupy.

I absolutely love the Knudsen brand cottage cheese. Its taste and texture consistency is so much better than any other cottage cheese I've tried, it's crazy. It's typically stocked at my local Walmart, but it never comes in big sizes.
