I always prefer to eat my food at a table as fresh as possible (local chinese place especially), so I care about how clean the place is but not really about how it looks. It's still the same philosophy as it was decades ago: the cheapest furniture you can amass that can still withstand a whole lot of abuse and chemical cleansers. The only real difference is how they appear, fast food places now consider how they'll fit in storage and in transport so you get stuff that looks more uniform and blocky as to take as little space as possible. It's also why the buildings' outside appearances are like that, exact same reasons just applied to construction.

Mine too, Skyline Mall, had a giant mural on one wall of a guy driving his car through a drive-in screen, a jukebox, the register area was styled like a theater marquee (even with a "showtime" for Godzilla) and had TV sets set into it playing movies, the tables were shaped like cars with fins on them, there was even a skylight with a sculpture of a lifesize cat burglar escaping the cops. it was fucking amazing. can't even find photos of it online and now the whole goddamn mall is one big Target.
