It's pretty fucking bad.

And you know as much as people love to semi-rightfully shit on McDonalds and other big worldwide or national franchises about how they're driving the smaller local or regional places out of business - in my experience those smaller regional fast food places are objectively way worse to work at.

Retail is better, anything is better really. There's just something about how food is involved that turns people into fuckin entitled animals. Even grocery stores involve food but it's nowhere near the same, at grocery stores people are calmer and more focused 99% of the time. In fast food you'll have a karen show up all sweaty with likw half her fucking purse spilling out over the floor, kids climbing all over her and she wants her specific fake-allergy order NOW RIGHT NOW

>>14699874
Enjoy your Karens who consistently demand to speak to the manager because they want to combine three different expired coupons.

>> No.14700081

Im sure it depends greatly on where you work but ultimately it sounds like it sucks. Either you work as McDonalds and deal with women and minorities or you work at Chateau Michelin Star Parlez Vous 3 where you deal with uppity rich people and either way you probably spend all day fantasizing about just shooting as many people as possible before the cops take you out. Even in the middle ground its probably a thankless job. I could never work food service.

so most of the customers were obedient and well behaved for the most part

I got a job bussing tables at a certain Italian restaurant chain after my regular work disappeared due to COVID. It's honestly not that bad. Everyone's pretty chill, work is simple enough, and most of the managers are tolerable. One of them is reddit incarnate and I hate him, he was warning us about incels and the red pill the other day which was honestly pretty hysterical. Customers can be pretty completely intolerable, entitled fuckheads sometimes, but I don't deal with them personally other than someone occasionally asking me for a box or some shit. Black people don't tip and they leave a mess all the time and anyone who tries to dissuade you from thinking that wants you to be ignorant. 6/10 not bad.

>> No.14702249

I once had to work at this late night Greek restaurant that was run by a Chinese guy. I was on parole and the job was critical for me staying out.

It was literally hell. I've worked many customer service jobs but being a server/prep help was the worst. Guests treat you like shit and there was barely a night where I did not have to break up a fight or cleaning up puke. What was the worst was the owner would use me as pretty much a slave saying if I didn't work overtime or do something that wasn't really my job he would report me to my PO

Working fast food isn't that bad knowing what your are in for, but working at fancy restaurants is terrible. I remember a prep cook got yelled at one night for sloppy knife work and one of the cooks consoled him over it. Later that cook got bitched at because a filet that was cooked correctly at medium rare was sent back. He quit pin the spot and two other cooks quit too as did the entire prep line. It was awkward as fuck you could see the chef was pissed but also terrified because he knew what he done. We had to stop taking tables and he quit the next day.

It's a horrible industry to plan on working in for a long time.
It has the single highest turnover of staff in it out of all others.
Chefs are constantly changing restaurants to try and find one that at least doesn't take the piss out of them and has reasonable wages or timetables.
They hardly ever find one.

I worked in 6 restaurants, the last one I worked in was the best but I still wanted out.

Really depends on the place. I can't speak for these McDiddlers cause I never worked fast food but I worked in a variety of kitchens. Right now I have a great time at my job, nice crew and feel like I'm learning a lot/ love what I do. But if it's bad personnel it can be so shitty. Last restaurant I worked at was a midbrow pub but most crew were ex-fine dining and were pretentious to hell. Now I'm working in a midbrow pub with a bunch of Mexicans and it's a blast, and the food is more interesting.

Kinda fucking awful desu. Granted all 3 food jobs I had came with extremely strange circumstances

First one I started as a server at a vegan restaurant run by a Vietnamese cult. Ended up working in the kitchen because I'm a god awful server but a decent cook. Basically became the sous chef without any benefits, overworked to hell and was the only one in the kitchen that cared about the quality of the food. Argued with the chef and prep cook about spoiled ingredients over and over. Servers were overstaffed while the kitchen was understaffed. 0 communication at all, crazy Vietnamese manager, whole thing was run like shit and caused me to become an alcoholic

Ended up bouncing and worked at a local fast food joint because I needed cash quick. It was a small business and the higher ups fucked up any enjoyable part of the job. Customers were extremely rude, there was a line out to the nearby intersection for hours at a time despite the staff busting their asses and getting each car out in under 2 minutes. Totally mismanaged, higher ups would sexually harass the girls there, got away with it even after it was reported.

Left there and went to a high end wine bar/pizzeria. Enter staff was druggies or had no experience, the chef was a fat asshole who had no idea what he was doing. The chef and one of the cooks got into a fist fight, half the kitchen left overnight, I got all the main responsibilities despite never cooking any Italian food in my life, and got laid off 2 weeks in because the restaurant closed.

In my experience, it fucking blows but I can cook pretty well because of it

Old white people are by far the worst customers I’ve ever dealt with. They want everything done differently than on the menu and want extra of everything but don’t want to pay regular prices. I worked at McDonald's for 3 years throughout my second half of high school.

Cons:
>very exhausting work. You will go home and want to pass out on your couch
>your feet will hurt after every shift, tons of standing and power walking
>you will reek of food. It's hard to wash out
>The work is grueling. It really feels like a machine should be doing it
>coworkers make or break your shifts.
>grill is awful. You are the kitchen bitch and do all the work. You also get burned a lot
>during summer, the kitchen is so hot people faint.
>you feel like a slave. Managers are like drill sergeants and will ream you out
>you will get fired for literally anything and are easily replaceable

Pros:
>the work is actually very simple.
>the pay was not that bad for a "minimum wage" job. I started at 8.75 (Minimum was 8.25), and they gave raises every 6 months. I quit making $10.70. If you get promoted, you can make even more money. Managers make a dollar or two more, and if you keep going, store managers make 35-50k a year. That's about the same as a teacher, really not that bad
>They will feed you for free. McDonald's basically fed me during most of high school. I would go in early and eat before my shift, eat halfway in my shift, and then at the end of my shift I would take food home. I am very grateful to them for that
>There are no strings attached. You can quit whenever and it has no affect on your credibility. You may also come back whenever, they don't care.
>The people you meet while working will be some of the most interesting people you'll ever meet. A lot of bros, guys who went to prison, illegal immigrant moms who will teach you Spanish, weird white autistic dudes in their 40's, and plenty of hoodrats.
>McDonald's will teach you how to be a great worker. They will instill all the best fundamentals into your brain which will you will carry with you your entire life. I have stood out above other people at all of my jobs afterward due to my work ethic.

It's bad compared to a comfy office job but at the same time, having your job "reset" each day rather than having meetings/projects/etc. that follow you home is a plus. You can kinda zone out working fast food.

Agree pretty much entirely with this.

That said, the McDonald's I worked at was a complete bitch when it came to the free food. You had to declare anything you ate and they were ultra strict. Once got bitched at because I took too large a size of fries and then after bitching at me, they started gossiping about me "you'll never guess what anon took for lunch!". I actually rage quit that McDonalds because I was having a bad day once then one of the team leaders took the piss out of my voice when I ordered a customer's customised burger.

Yeah depends on the location whether or not they're anal about the food you eat. I do know it's company wide policy to feed their employees, so you at least will get a free meal even at the most anal of locations. My location was super chill, it was a franchise though.

One was a manager who OD'd on xanax and alchohol, the other was a DRIVER who OD's on methadone. This was within a 6 month period. Quit because I don't like drugs or dealing with cops. Now I deliver flowers on the weekends for extra cash. The tips are way better. Every now and then get a number from a MILF whose husband fucked up. Food service should be a 1st job for 15 year olds. Worked at McDurdels for 2 years in high school. Managers were mostly female 40 year old high school drop outs. When the monopoly game rolled around every few months they would sit in the back and go through cartons of cups and fry containers peeling off the coupons and cashing them in at another franchise. These old ladies would also try to get me to fuck their friends. In the break room people would put some porn on the TV and others would smoke weed behind the dumpster. Some characters I met working at McDonalds overnight shift

One manager
>One of the managers was a 19 year old kid
>Absolute unit, built like a linebacker
>Good guy but absolutely retarded
>He's got a daughter that he loves
>Has gone through three separate paternity cases with his wife who wants her new boyfriend (his ex best friend) to be the father
>Gets three separate DNA tests proving he's the dad
>They have one more paternity test and somehow the other guy is the father
>They both live with him now and he pays for everything (girl, guy, daughter) on a McDonalds salary
>Eventually after a few months he breaks free, dates a new girl, immediately gets her pregnant
>I'm friends with him on Facebook and he seems very happy

Another manager
>Sex offender weirdo
>Has to work overnight because of some law
>Literally had a maniacal supervillain laugh he would do when overwhelmed
>One time we were swamped with orders and totally understaffed and I heard him cackling in the break room
>Walked in to check on him
>He bashes a clipboard in half over his head

Weird BDSM girl
>Wore her big ringed BDSM collar to work every day because her master made her
>He was some weird greasy pimply guy

And the gay furry couple
>Looked like those puppets from that nickelodeon cartoon
>Speaks for itself, they were both gay furries and wore the tails to work
>They made tails and stuff sold them on etsy
>Would bring speakers to work and play final fantasy music
>Both very nice, just cringe

Plenty of more characters but those just stick out to my. Most of them were very nice. Just very stupid, but not stupid enough to get the benefit of being actually retarded. I assume a lot of people are in this category lol.

>> No.14717860

There are two modes of operation. First is understaffed. The job sucks so nobody wants it and the ones that make the mistake of joining your team don't last long. It's a struggle to keep the doors open and that burns everyone out even more. You're busting your ass to do three jobs at once plus covering for call ins and no shows all the time. It's overwhelming and frustrating because even when you work really hard it's never enough. I struggle with this because I take work too seriously and get fed up eventually. It's important to recognize that it's not your fault and that you shouldn't stress over it. If shit sucks it sucks. Do your best until we can get some more people.

Second mode, fully staffed. In the first mode management is lenient because they're desperate. Okay trish called in for the third time this month but shit she's here 4 days a week at least and we need the help. The kitchen might be a hot mess but at least it's open. In the second mode this all stops and management becomes strict. Temps, dates, cleaning, paperwork, everything done 200% by the book. This often follows after open interviews as the manager tries to train all their new hires to be good workers because they have the leeway to fuckin fire your ass now. This is ideal for management because with a full staff that's well trained you can basically just do whatever you want all day. Show up an hour late, sit in the office and play on your laptop for 6 hours "doing paperwork" then go home an hour early.

how does abusing alcohol get you through the NEXT day? Every time I drink I feel like crap the next day. If this is how you think, no wonder your life sucks.

That being said I've worked as a waiter on and off since I was 19 (27 now) and it's not that bad. I work at a nice restaurant in a rich white part of town, and I made 37k last year off working ~20 hours a week. it highly depends on what your clientele is like and whether you are being paid tips or hourly. I don't understand people who work food for 7-8 dollars an hour at mcdonalds or somewhere similar. Hell even 10-12 an hour in retail is pretty sad. Waiting tables is so much easier and with 2-3 years work you can work at a fancy place and make literally 20 (low end) to 50 an hour.

>> No.14717928

i'm self taught, didnt do culinary school. basically find a high volume short staffed kitchen and let them kick your ass for a few years. you'll learn speed, kitchen operation, and all the culinary skills you need. then after you get your shit kicked in by a high volume kitchen for a few years you can go work for fine dining/fancy and you'll be leagues better than all the culinary school brats and move up through the ranks A LOT faster. im talking like first week coming from an ass kicking kitchen being moved onto saucier. fancy restaraunts are slow/lazy and somebody who's came from the trenches of high volume and short staffed will destroy any culinary student that went straight to fine dining, you'll find yourself in a sous position very quickly.

When you go home at night sweaty and tired after a hard day it helps you relax. Those feet don't ache so much after a few drinks. That stiff back loosens up. Both of these have truth to them. Was a busser then server then manager. Managers tend not to have enough information to actually be impartial and fair and just have to be brutal assholes or else the place turns into a pigsty. 20% of servers are truly awful and ruin it for everyone else. We'd love to fire them, but then the other 80% can never get a fucking day off and start to turn into the 20%.

Pay sucks, most of the co-workers suck (constantly complaining about not having enough hours, they get more hours, then call out because it's too many hours, etc.), clientele is pretty tame for the most part but since most of them are old white people/fat, trailer trash, ham planets and college kids, I'd say they're about 50/50 in terms on the rudeness and politeness scale. >delivery driver for pizza hut for 8 months
>last day was the super bowl, right before 'rona

It was unironically comfy, getting used to the layout of the whiter part of town at night while listening to eurobeat in my 2005 corolla. Pay was decent, the coworkers and manager were at the very least decent people, and the only reason I quit was to focus on college. Also, I learned how to racially profile people to estimate tips.

What's it like?

Almost all young people under the ages of 25.
No one gives a shit about their job except for maybe that one guy who doesn't stop cleaning to get out of prep work or what ever.
This causes the idiots to make lots of mistakes, and you get angry customers, who come back and yell at you like you're scum to get their order right.
Smokers have their own little 'group' and have a better time.
Girls are usually horny and down to fuck.

it's OK, until you get old and no - one gives a shit about you.

Oh my god anon it's so bad now.
I work at White-Castle, and let me tell you it wasn't that bad before. WC isn't big, so it was usually slow except for the rush hour.
But then hell came to earth, in the form of the 4 horseman of fast-food.
Uber Eats.
Doordash
GrubHub
And Postmates.
Holy fucking shit. After this point everything became terrible. Fucking constant orders back-to-back-to-back.
Niggers in the drive-through getting even madder since their food takes longer. Fucking fatties ordering tons and tons of food all at the same time for some unexplainable reason. It's all hell.
Even as a college-student, nothing is more stressful to me than going into work on a Friday or Saturday.
The only thing that get's me through sometimes is me imagining hitting customers, splashing hot oil in thier face or legitimately just pulling out a gun and spraying the place down and killing them.
Just work in retail. It's better, tbqh.

Melodramatic and "stressful". I've worked about every corner of a restaurant and it's pretty easy, but most of my coworkers are bitches. Typically it's because restaurants are staffed by teens or young adults that grew up in the area and know each other, so they tend to be around each other enough to piss themselves off. Hilariously enough, in my situation, the two brats scheming against each other are two 30 year old men that have never worked a real job and instead keep sabotaging each others work areas. Aside from that the worst that can happen is have to serve a ton of customers at once, which isn't a problem if you can just shut up and work.

I once worked at a concession stand that sold fried food/grilled items in florida when I was 19. Was staffed by these gorgeous Ukrainian inmigrant chicks. We started selling beer at 8am and people starting drinking as soon as we opened. We were doing shots of Jack Daniel's every hour or so. Not the worse gig I ever had. Made 200 bucks in a weekend working just a few hours. Don't know how it goes for corporate chains.

>Melodramatic and "stressful"
I feel like that is so many wagie jobs at this point with the constant bickering going on between management and staff, or the customers and staff where once you get out of that job all of that shit seems so trivial and stupid.
