And you know as much as people love to semi-rightfully shit on McDonalds and other big worldwide or national franchises about how they're driving the smaller local or regional places out of business - in my experience those smaller regional fast food places are objectively way worse to work at.

Retail is better, anything is better really. There's just something about how food is involved that turns people into fuckin entitled animals. Even grocery stores involve food but it's nowhere near the same, at grocery stores people are calmer and more focused 99% of the time. In fast food you'll have a karen show up all sweaty with likw half her fucking purse spilling out over the floor, kids climbing all over her and she wants her specific fake-allergy order NOW RIGHT NOW

Im sure it depends greatly on where you work but ultimately it sounds like it sucks. Either you work as McDonalds and deal with women and minorities or you work at Chateau Michelin Star Parlez Vous 3 where you deal with uppity rich people and either way you probably spend all day fantasizing about just shooting as many people as possible before the cops take you out. I worked at Wendy's for like six months during my senior year of high school. It wasn't so bad. You had to deal with the typical bullshit that comes with any other minimum wage job, but I wouldn't say it was the worst job I've had. I only got yelled at by a customer twice and one of those times the person was clearly on some kind of drug.

Chill, but that's possibly because I worked on a military base that housed civilian type mini malls and foodcourts
so most of the customers were obedient and well behaved for the most part
it was cool to work with a sub place that used a grill and being someone that volunteered for grill for the most part meant i didnt have to talk with any customers or deal with any complaints besides the occasional requests

I got a job bussing tables at a certain Italian restaurant chain after my regular work disappeared due to COVID. It's honestly not that bad. Everyone's pretty chill, work is simple enough, and most of the managers are tolerable. One of them is reddit incarnate and I hate him, he was warning us about incels and the red pill the other day which was honestly pretty hysterical. Customers can be pretty completely intolerable, entitled fuckheads sometimes, but I don't deal with them personally other than someone occasionally asking me for a box or some shit. I once had to work at this late night Greek restaurant that was run by a Chinese guy. I was on parole and the job was critical for me staying out.

It was literally hell. I've worked many customer service jobs but being a server/prep help was the worst. Working fast food isn't that bad knowing what your are in for, but working at fancy restaurants is terrible. I remember a prep cook got yelled at one night for sloppy knife work and one of the cooks consoled him over it. Later that cook got bitched at because a filet that was cooked correctly at medium rare was sent back. He quit pin the spot and two other cooks quit too as did the entire prep line. First one I started as a server at a vegan restaurant run by a Vietnamese cult. Ended up working in the kitchen because I'm a god awful server but a decent cook. Basically became the sous chef without any benefits, overworked to hell and was the only one in the kitchen that cared about the quality of the food. Argued with the chef and prep cook about spoiled ingredients over and over. Servers were overstaffed while the kitchen was understaffed. 0 communication at all, crazy Vietnamese manager, whole thing was run like shit and caused me to become an alcoholic

Ended up bouncing and worked at a local fast food joint because I needed cash quick. It was a small business and the higher ups fucked up any enjoyable part of the job. Customers were extremely rude, there was a line out to the nearby intersection for hours at a time despite the staff busting their asses and getting each car out in under 2 minutes. Totally mismanaged, higher ups would sexually harass the girls there, got away with it even after it was reported.

Left there and went to a high end wine bar/pizzeria. Enter staff was druggies or had no experience, the chef was a fat asshole who had no idea what he was doing. The chef and one of the cooks got into a fist fight, half the kitchen left overnight, I got all the main responsibilities despite never cooking any Italian food in my life, and got laid off 2 weeks in because the restaurant closed.

In my experience, it fucking blows but I can cook pretty well because of it

There are two modes of operation. First is understaffed. The job sucks so nobody wants it and the ones that make the mistake of joining your team don't last long. It's a struggle to keep the doors open and that burns everyone out even more. You're busting your ass to do three jobs at once plus covering for call ins and no shows all the time. Okay trish called in for the third time this month but shit she's here 4 days a week at least and we need the help. The kitchen might be a hot mess but at least it's open. In the second mode this all stops and management becomes strict. Temps, dates, cleaning, paperwork, everything done 200% by the book. This often follows after open interviews as the manager tries to train all their new hires to be good workers because they have the leeway to fuckin fire your ass now. This is ideal for management because with a full staff that's well trained you can basically just do whatever you want all day. Show up an hour late, sit in the office and play on your laptop for 6 hours "doing paperwork" then go home an hour early.

I work at a nice restaurant in a rich white part of town, and I made 37k last year off working ~20 hours a week. it highly depends on what your clientele is like and whether you are being paid tips or hourly. I don't understand people who work food for 7-8 dollars an hour at mcdonalds or somewhere similar. Hell even 10-12 an hour in retail is pretty sad. Waiting tables is so much easier and with 2-3 years work you can work at a fancy place and make literally 20 (low end) to 50 an hour.

I once worked at a concession stand that sold fried food/grilled items in florida when I was 19. Was staffed by these gorgeous Ukrainian inmigrant chicks. We started selling beer at 8am and people starting drinking as soon as we opened. We were doing shots of Jack Daniel's every hour or so. Not the worse gig I ever had. Made 200 bucks in a weekend working just a few hours. Don't know how it goes for corporate chains.

I feel like that is so many wagie jobs at this point with the constant bickering going on between management and staff, or the customers and staff where once you get out of that job all of that shit seems so trivial and stupid.
