Female Whisky drinker here. It’s funny buying a good single malt. I usually get asked who I’m buying it for, husband? Father? Brother? Surely it can’t be for yourself. Then when I tell it’s for me, I get a shocked look. They recover and decide to ‘play along’ with me. Then they start telling me lots of things I know I about Whisky.
It’s at this point, if I can be bothered, I go through their shelves and tell them all the ones I’ve tasted and why I like them or not. Which regions I prefer, big up Islay, and why I’m not a fan of Irish and 100% prefer Scottish.
Now is when I think they feel bad. Because they always offer me loads of samples. I can usually free taste like 4/5 different ones min on every visit.
Having said that met a really nice woman last time through the airport who was giving out Talisker samples. We had a great chat. She was awesome.
Now guys at bars when you order a single malt find you immediately intriguing. They watch you take a sip. I think they are waiting to see if you make a face. When you look pleased then they have their in to strike up a conversation.
I don’t know a lot of other female whisky drinkers but I wish I did. I can only go on so many old fashioned hunts with boys.

Right....

I suppose this is the place to ask.

Is there any difference in taste depending on how expensive the vodka is?

I don't drink it, I only use it for home made extracts, but I've noticed some are very cheap, and some very expensive.

I also noticed it doesn't say "potato" as an ingredient. I thought vodka was made out of potatoes... (?????)

>Is there any difference in taste depending on how expensive the vodka is?
Only to a certain degree.

>I also noticed it doesn't say "potato" as an ingredient. I thought vodka was made out of potatoes... (?????)
You can make vodka from grains, potato, etc...

>> No.14692936

>>14692859
Vodka is usually pure grain alcohol, no potato involved, at least not in commercial ones.

The biggest difference in price is purity and smoothness. The €5 bottle will taste like paint thinner, the €10 bottle will burn but be somewhat palatable, the €20 bottle will be smooth with a slight burn, and the €50 bottle will be pure without any burn, and smooth enough to not overpower anything it's served with.

>What is your all time favorite whisky?
Hard to say.
If it's out of anything I've ever tasted then an old 1960's Haig, Old Pulteney 18, or maybe Taketsuru Pure Malt (discontinued).
If it's out of anything I've ever owned then Glenlivet 18, Talisker distillers edition, or Aberlour Abunadh.
If it's out of bottles I've finished start to finish myself then Ardbeg 10.
And if regular retail price is considered then Starward Twofold or Glen Moray 15.

I do think your mind (and the whisky) changes over the course of drinking the bottle and that price is important. And another benefit of drinking the bottle yourself is that you're likely to try the stuff both while sober and after a few.

This is a good strat. Even if I were to recommend something I'd say to wait for it to go on sale (which could take a year or two).
My only suggestion, if it is available to you, is to go to a whisky bar and taste everything. Good bars do half pours for half price. Ideally you get to the point where what your buying is the best whisky that you've tried that is also on sale.
I think I've only been to a whisky bar 4 or 5 times, but each time I share 20 half pours with a mate and end up trying 40 whiskys in one go.
There may be no great way around risking your money when it comes to trying whisky, but there are ways around risking a bottles worth of time.

They released a 15 year old cask strength. It's pretty good.
Not solera like the normal 15, and still lacks power like all Glenfiddichs, but if your palate is in top form and you can grasp the complexity, it's great.
Unfortunately that is not most days for me, so it's often just mediocre booze.

>>14696996

>>14697195
Depends on how you rank it.
Of the countries that don't produce bad whisky, Wales produces the most whisky.
Therefore Welsh whisky is the indisputable number 1.

Good showings from Australia, Taiwan. I've been impressed with some showings from France and India. I've not tried German. Canada is not beating the average.
As for your ranking it should be Scotch>Japanese>Irish>American.

>>14697211
They're good but generally poor value (especially if you value age). To my knowledge there isn't a lot of bad Australian whisky though.

Doesn't matter, as long as its bottled in Japan it can be called Japanese whisky made in Japan. Nikka Black is nearly 100% scotch and yet it can be called Made in Japan because its bottled in Japan.

>Of the countries that don't produce bad whisky, Wales produces the most whisky.
>Therefore Welsh whisky is the indisputable number 1.
Wales has 3 distilleries, the biggest one (Penderyn) produces 700,000 litres of spirit a year.
For comparison, North British in Glasgow does over 17 million litres of spirit a year.
Even outside of grain distillers, Blair Athol (a Diageo plant that mostly provides malt for Bell's blended scotch) does 2.5 million litres of malt spirit a year.
While I enjoy a good amount of stuff Penderyn makes, Wales is certainly not #1 in production numbers by far. Even newer whisky markets like Taiwan and France do similar or more production per year then Wales.

Vodka is simply a clear spirit (no brown color from the wooden barrel) of at least 40% alcohol by volume and having a neutral character.
Typically, there's little difference between a top-shelf vodka and a middle-shelf vodka, but a bottom-shelf vodka might only be distilled once or might not be charcoal-treated, meaning it'll have a harsher and less pleasant character.

I like peated sherried whisky.
Why would I not buy it? Other than price which has stopped me thus far.

Talisker distillers edition is cheaper but not cask strength. Still, it's great which would lead me to believe Ardbeg's offering would be similarly so.
Lagavulin's distillers edition is even more expensive, but apparently also great.

I have a hard time believing that a very intense whisky bottled at a higher than usual abv with added sherry flavors would not be intense. Are you sure you just don't like Ardbeg?

Unlimited in the sense that there isn't persistence like with a standard bottling. If all the IBs collectively release new bottlings faster than I can drink then there is functionally unlimited new whisky to try. And I think there is.
Though some IBs have historied standard releases.

If you were actually chasing a certain flavor profile it would suck to find it in a small IB one off release. So much so that you'd probably be better off not even looking there.

I myself constantly debate the value in buying a whisky not obtainable locally when travelling, or special releases in general because I won't be able to get my hands on it again if it turns out to be really good.

But I tried Ardbeg An Oa at a tasting, it was good but I thought all the barrel finish stuff on the back was bullshit so I bought Ardbeg 10 instead which I loved.

I should probably try it again now that I'm no longer a noob. I did give Ardmore a second chance (albeit 6/8 year old independent bottlings) and enjoyed myself.

Islay drinkers tend to be those who value subtly the least. And Bowmore 12 is boring. Complex light whiskys exist, Bowmore 12 is not one of them.

Of the lightly peated single malts: Springbank, Highland Park, Benromach, Tomintoul (Peaty Tang), Talisker, Bunnahabhain; all of them have more character than Bowmore 12.

For that matter the lightly peated blends and bottles finished in ex-islay casks also tend to be more complex that the Bowmore.

Not that I've tried the 15.

Bourbon is substantially more expensive everywhere else in the world, but scotch isn't. Also far too many American whiskys have reduced alcohol content overseas.

Not too surprised since upwards of 90% of all the stand-out whiskey the US produces is all bourbon, although there's a few Rye's that are making quite a name for themselves (Dad's Hat, Whistlepig, Michters), so more often than not, you have people getting a sub-par taste of American whiskey since bourbon is either too expensive, or not sold.

I'm unbelievably skeptical. No American whisky I've ever had has approached the quality of the average 15 year old scotch. Very few can compete with nicer 12 year olds. And I do like rye.

I don't think I'm getting a sub par taste. I think you're getting hugely discounted prices due to lower taxes, and are comparing against bottom shelf international competition, then getting a big head because you inevitably win.

Knob Creek and Buffalo Trace (which is reduced abv here) are nowhere near as good as Macallan, Bowmore, Laphroaig, and Glenmorangie. Though with the exception of Laphroaig it seems you favor quite timid scotches.

Booker's is substantially more expensive than any of those.

>Mind telling me?

I mean anything pricer than your entry level speysides like Glenfiddich 12 or your standard Glenmorangie 10.

I must say I feel the complete opposite way about most Irish whiskys. Redbreast and Green Spot were quite disappointing. Interesting texture, otherwise pretty standard stuff.

So then you self-admittedly are getting subpar tastes, but because of the lower ABV. Knob Creek is standard at 50% in the US and Buffalo Trace is 45%. Bookers is in a league of its own. Although it could just be that you don't like bourbon, which is characteristically a lot more sweet and rich.

Buffalo Trace is the one I'd say I like the most but I wouldn't call it exceptional. I've also had Woodford Reserve, Hillrock, Bulleit, and Angels Envy. I didn't think any of them were bad but not great either. I'll still keep trying some that interest me though.

I've gone to town on everything
vodka, whiskey, beer, gin, tequila.
I suppose I should be more scientific but I got shitfaced approximately the same on all. gin was the most insufferable. gin is supposed to be the better of the bunch based on the science of congeners. Beer mix was second worst, day after I could smell perfume on others from a mile away, like some magical ability. I heard wine is miserable but have not tried that yet

Is the 14 year old any different?
I tried the 10, 12, 15 and cask strength side by side and found them all to be shockingly similar.

The reason Buffalo Trace is exceptional is because it's a 25$ bourbon that can easily compete with 50-60$ bourbon's. It sells so well here that stores put limits on how many bottles an individual can buy.

>I didn't think any of them were bad but not great either. I'll still keep trying some that interest me though.
If I could give some recommendations to narrow your search and possibly save you some money:
-Bottled in Bond - If you see a whiskey with this label you can bet on it at least being decent, as per the strict requirements in order to attain such a label. These are also typically on the cheaper side.
-Larceny is on the stronger side with a heavy kick and a firm spiciness.
-Wild Turkey is another go-to meme similar to Buffalo Trace in its smoothness but offering a moderately complex taste.
-I recently picked up Evan Williams Single Barrel. Smooth as butter and definitely surprised me.

Lower ABV proofage is a pretty hefty detriment to bourbon because bourbon is better at higher proofs because it really brings out the deeper sweetness. I have 15 bourbon's on the shelf next to me and only 2 of them are 80 proof. The rest are between 90 and 120 proof, with one or two others at 86 proof.

I plan on maybe picking Old Pulteney. Seems everyone in the thread is talking about it.

Bad (reduced abv)
>Buffalo Trace
Bad (reduced abv)
>Russell's Reserve
Boring, but not bad.
>Blanton's
Actually good. And for that matter, good for the price.
>Eagle Rare
Bad
>Angel's Envy
Shockingly bad value. Especially given it's just finished Bulleit Rye for double the price.

Mostly they're just bad for the price.

>Bottled in Bond
>because bourbon is better at higher proofs
Everything tastes better at higher abvs. But raising the abv raises the tax, which again undermines the low tax price advantage strategy. You have to compete dollar for dollar, abv for abv.

Interesting that you say that, considering the 10 Year Old variant of Eagle Rare Bourbon has consistently been rated higher than many 15, 20, and even 25 year old whiskey's.

I'm not sure how much I should care about whisky awards.
Wine awards are a joke and I take more than one on the bottle to be a red flag.

For the most part I just pray Jim Murray doesn't name any of my favorites worlds best.

>It's on the cheaper end of top-shelf bourbon.
not him, but what is more expensive and actually substantially better for the price increase?

I've had bookers and stagg jr and they're really the only bourbons that I'd say compare with better single malts like ardbeg or springbank.
