Alberta Cuisine Thread. Saskatchewan and Manitoba welcome. I made one of these almost a year ago and it somehow hit bump limit, so here's another go. Favorite local spots, horror stories or theories on how Burger Baron locations are still in business.

In Edmonton, Sloppy Hoggs on 95A st and 118 ave is a great place. It was on an episode of "You Gotta Eat Here", which is basically Canada's version of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives
If it wasn't for corona, Cactus Club Cafe is a somewhat expensive but really good quality food. That and both the Oilers and Flames like to go there after hockey games.
Not really a "horror" story but the Queen's Donair on Jasper Ave had a fight in it around midnight almost weekly a few years ago when I worked up the street from there. Not sure if it's gotten better or not

I used to work there, and I can tell you it's almost guaranteed due to upper management. There's a single person still working at the location I was at and that's the head chef who is the cunt that makes everyone want to quit. Hell, one regional chef stepped down to be a Sr. Sou because he couldn't take the headache, and the next one quit the company entirely and now works for Joey's

Let me ask you, and for that matter a bunch of other people in this thread, something that bothers me. Who the fuck do you think you are? I live in YK but I love Canada in general. Been all over lived in BC, PEI, AB, ON and spent half a year in NWT. Each province and territory has unique things about it, and are beautiful in their own way. If I had to generalize like an idiot and say which province has hands down the worst, most crude, uneducated, primitive thinking people in the entire nation it is 100% Alberta and no I am not even a fucking liberal. Never voted JT so don't even start pointing fingers. But on the contrary many people in Alberta are great and many are my friends. All of this "perfect Canada" separatist, WEXIT nonsense is always propagated by assholes like you who spend their time hating others because of their political views. You have no common decency, no basic level of respect for your fellow man living in a democratic society (a real democratic society not the shit show farce they have in the US). My guess is all you retards hating on Eastern Canada especially the Maritimes and BC to a degree are conservatives/PPC yeah? Let me ask you this. Why is Canadian real estate beyond reach for most middle class Canadians? The last decade it skyrocketed. My parents who bought their old rancher for 200k in the mid 80s in BC sold it last year for a 7 figure price tag. That shit should not have been allowed. It's because our country was sold out to China under Harper. The conservatives looked the other way, didn't bother to intervene on a Federal level and now it's probably too late to fix things (only "cool" off the market a bit). You people put all the blame on liberals without recognizing your own short comings and the failures of the politicians you vote for. Trudeau has his flaws but by the time he took office Chinese influence in Canada was far too deep especially at the municipal and provincial levels. For example, this situation with Huawei 5G. Four Five Eyes nations have condemned them publicly but we have not. Trudeau can’t do so publicly (only privately, Huawei won’t have 5G infrastructure in Canada) because if he did that the Canadians being held in China would be executed most likely. Trudeau has done a lot of things right especially during this pandemic. Again never voted for him but I give credit where it is due. Universal pharmacare, dental care, and basic income may become a reality. Won’t be a utopia but there is a good chance that many Canadians won’t have to live in poverty anymore. If it were not for the CERB for example many of my friends would have become homeless. I’m just tired of the backwards ass thinking of so many people from these provinces online. I would expect shit like this from a dumbfuck Amerimutt Trumptard, not from you guys.

I consider St. Albert separate from Edmonton, and along with Sherwood Park, would be the only two places I'd ever life in Edmonton. And I'd only ever go into town to go to a special restaurant or the mall. Else 99.5% of the time would be spend in the bubble town. The city is granting me an advanced education that I can take anywhere in America, so I shouldn't shit on it too much but here goes...

The attractiveness of a city is a combination of the city amenities and the surrounding area. Edmonton has the predicament that they are near nothing particularly special. No, Elk Island isn't. No the various lakes aren't anything you couldn't find in buttfuck Sask. No, you aren't close to the mountains even if you think you are. This places more onus on the city itself to provide leisure. It is evident the municipality understands this because they built a large mall, and hold many festivals when it's warm 1/3 of the year, and why the city holds it's hockey team with such reverence. In Edmonton once it snows in late Oct or Nov, it never melts and just turns brown. Edmonton is a grey brown city for at least half the year, significantly colder, and do not get the chinook breaks that those south get. Edmonton feels like what Red Deer would become if it were enlarged.

Edmonton mostly suffers because it has to be compared to Calgary. But there is no comparison, Calgary (at least pre 2014, but still mostly today) is a city a tier ahead of Edmonton. If TO/VAN/MTL were at the top, CGY would be the next tier and EDM would not be amongst them.

It feels cleaner, I've never met anyone say otherwise. Downtown especially. The people feel more industrious and don't hold various governmental or rent-seeking positions. You get used to driving 30 minutes and being in pristine Kananaskis country (nobody goes into Banff except newbies and tourists).

Also, west ed is mostly shit (the area, not the mall - I quite enjoy the mall).

>> No.14676711

>>14675382
>>14675424
>>14676675
Con't.

This is also evident because Calgary has less trouble maintaining professional hockey players than does Edmonton. Indeed, it has half the stigma that Edmonton does in that regard. And also why when Edmonton campaigned to be a hub city, they had to take wilderness footage that is much, much closer to Calgary.

For all their moralizing, the city has potholes everywhere (the weather is brutal), hardly anybody shovels their walk outside of more suburb-y areas like Terwilleger and others, an LRT system that is not as nice nor as convenient as Calgary's, and do not have a recycling nor garbage disposal program other than "throw bags on the side of the street like a Neanderthal".

That meme pic of Edmonton is exactly what Edmonton looks like. There is a haze of brown and grey that is unmatched anywhere else I've lived. Never seen anything like it. Edmonton made me value my -50 rated parka and thick scarf to cover my face. Living in Calgary I thought I had overspent for a coat that outperforms the climate, but it doesn't, it just barely holds it together against the -50 days we had last winter in Edmonton.

It goes back to my original comment - the people who enjoy it here grew up here, formed memories highlighted by their loved ones. They would have been happy almost anywhere, despite the area. Stockholm syndrome. Or are Pajeets who feel like they've found a city that matches their demographic, so they pretend it's a good city to begin with.
