Back in the olden days..before your time of course...ZERO car cup holders. Fact, people had to hold their bottle while driving. Some restaurants and drive-ins had plastic devices to hang over your door.
So while hot, and hungry and driving places, while you may have had a passenger to hold your bottle for you between sips for a moment here and there, if you were alone, you also used your knees to do it, you everyone had a stick shift car. Two feet and two handed driving. Precarious in the old cars.
Maybe you liked RC or you liked Coke, but if you got a sleeve of delicious Toms peanuts, you were already a hand short to hold it.

Then you had a further dilemma. That tube of plastic slides those peanuts right in there. This is my theory why people did it.
Is it delicious? Oddly yes, but not really that different than boba tea. The natural cinnamon and caramel flavors in the cola recipe really did go with the peanuts. Sip, get a few to bite, and done. I prefer them separate, but I'm not adverse. Remember peanuts used to be fresher and even more delicious than today.
