For me the ideal grilled cheese consists of a slice of white cheddar, a slice of gruyere, and a slice of smoked provolone, you can also use a bit of mozzarella. I like using 4 kinds of cheese. Then add pepper. Spread garlic butter on both sides of the bread, and into a pan on medium low heat until each side is golden brown and the cheese is melted. If you have a sandwich press you can also throw it on there for that nice grill mark effect.

If you're not an infantile child who doesn't mind adding other ingredients like greens into your grilled cheese, I enjoy adding 2 finely chopped cloves of garlic, a little red onion, a slice of tomato, and some spinach. You can also fry up or scramble an egg, that goes very well with it.

Butter the bread, not the pan; much easier to avoid burning the butter this way. Pan should be heated through but not on high, just make sure it's "preheated" so that it stays hot when you put the bread on it. Butter should sizzle but not smoke, at least not immediately. Make sure your pan is large enough to have the bread lay nice and flat.

I also tend to cover the pan when I cook mine. Makes the cheese metlier because trapped heat, and it's more forgiving not to burn the butter/bread since some moisture stays in the pan.

Good bread good cheese. Salt and pepper usually aren't necessary unless you really like pepper. Cheese tends to be plenty salty on its own. I often dip in leftover spaghetti sauce, or eat with a soup. If it's actually good bread and cheese I've used and not singles or shredded marble etc because I'm cheap, then I'll eat it without any condiments or extras because it's good shit and I want to taste it. It's usually cheap garbage though, unfortunately.

Medium heat, butter in pan, and thick slices of cheese on the bread. I like it this way because the bread will brown and the cheese will warm up but not completely melt which I think has a better texture. If you want to be fancy you can put a little cheese on the outside of the bread too. Tastes good with mustard or pickles on it for some acidity to balance out all the fat.

Also you don't want to use bread that has sugar in it, the sugar can just burn before the starch in it really browns.

Garlic butter on whole wheat preferably with some texturing.

A decent cheese of whichever kind you like, I prefer the sharpest cheddar I can get but preference is preference.

Low-med heat and wait for the pan to come to temp. Place the assembled sandwich and listen for light sizzling. If no sizzle then fuck off for a sec, if too much then you need to learn your stove top.

Cover so the heat can melt your cheese entirely and flip at your desired toast level. I like a little whisper of black personally.

Most important part. After finished you move it to a cutting board and cut on a bias, corner to opposite corner.
