>it's 39 different ingredients including rare herbs from a mountain, deep sea shellfish, dove meat, tropical fruits, exotic spices from africa, and mammoth tusk marrow
>it takes 150 hours of prep time for 3 bites
Why do foodies lie about the origins of dishes? I know it's a rich people dish. That doesn't make it a bad thing. Just stop lying.

Peasants didn't really have formal recipes, and even some common foodstuffs were literally just made by casual tradition. This is why we've lost the recipes to nearly ubiquitous things like garum, and now we have cultural anthropologists trying to reverse rngineer shit.
What used to be "grab some of these dried leaves and seeds we picked on the leeward side of the hill" is now "use one teaspoon of this spice, two tablespoons of this herb ground, a pinch of this seasoning, and some of this to flavour" where all the ingredients are grown in different countries because that's how an international market works.

A lot of dishes came out of pure circumstance, too. Random chemicals in the local soil and water affected their food, and the only way for you to replicate that is with processed chemicals. Russians once packed caviar with soil from the Caspian Sea which was high in sodium tetraborate which preserved it. Nowadays they use borax for the same effect.

Modern takes on classical food are rarely authentic. Does this actually surprise you? Also consider that some ingredients which may be rare now may have been more common then. >> No.14491082

Some of it is rich people posturing, but others are simply down to the fact that locally-sourced herbs aren't cultivated on a wide scale in many cases. What a peasant from France had access to is far different to what you have access to in the supermarket. Getting access to herbs like rue or lovage without self-cultivating is extraordinarily difficult if you live in the New World. Other plants have fallen so out of favor they're not even widely available in the Old World (skirrets come to mind immediately) and thus their scarcity drives up the cost of acquisition. This is true for your area too, undoubtedly. Many foragable plants aren't cultivated, and oftentimes the only real means of using them in dishes is to go out and hunt for them yourself.

A fine example of this is cilantro root o Thai dishes. Who has cilantro root unless you're growing so much cilantro you just have it lying around. It's not sold in any super market, so I guess just use stems

>> No.14491131

>>14491096
Cilantro is easy, even if you don't grow it yourself it's not ridiculously difficult to find someone who does and is willing to sell or just give you the plant if asked. What I'm talking about are plants that aren't in widescale cultivation. A pre-Columbian herb widely used to flavor chocolate before the arrival of the Spanish, Cymbopetalum penduliflorum, can only be sourced if you fly to Guatemala and go out into the countryside markets. That's difficult. Shit that modern global markets flat out ignore because it's not easy to pack onto a plane and ship around the globe or popular enough to start up cultivation on a local scale.

This is a dish my grandmother used to make, and I think it's legit peasant food. Pretty much all fat and carbs, but so good on a cold day.

Recipe from somewhere:

Dumplings:

2 eggs, beaten
4 tablespoons (60 g.) butter
1 1/2 cups (170 g.) flour
1/2 cup (1,2 dl.) milk
salt to taste

Soup:

1 1/2 quart (1,5 L.) milk
1 tablespoon (15 g.) sugar
2 tablespoons (30 g.) butter

Cream the 4 tablespoons butter. Add the beaten eggs, salt, and then 1/2 cup of the flour to make a paste like mixture. Add 2 tablespoons of the milk. Then add the remaining flour and milk. B e sure to avoid lumps. Bring the milk, sugar and 2 tablespoons butter to a soft boil. Add the dumplings by dipping a teaspoon in the milk, then scoop the dough, and drop the dumplings back in the milk. Continue this procedure until the dough is gone. Simmer until the dumplings surface. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon to taste. Serves 6.

I know exactly what you mean, and it does rub me the wrong way. Especially when it has exotic spices added to an old european recipe. Most of the peasant food we got here doesn't have more than 4 ingredients, and lacks meat, since it was extremely expensive till 30 years ago. A common base for many recipes is stale but not moldy bread soaked in water, since you couldn't afford to throw it away.

now, if you don't know, and you likely don't, trump is genuinely funny and self deprecating. a single retweet/tweet, especially when it sounds as outlandish as that, I take more as him putting it out because he knows everyone who hates him will hyper focus on that, while he signs executive orders in the background with no media questioning that at all, with the amount of times he has done this, you think news outlets would catch on but they don't.

You're literally praising Trump for doing an, "lol, i was just pretending to be retarded". That's fucking sad, anon. I don't know what news you're reading/watching, but they preface everything he does on twitter with, "meanwhile here's the real news that he was trying to distract people from". They still have to report it, because it's still the president making an official statement, whatever that means anymore. Just yesterday he tweeted that he was considering postponing the election. Of course it was covered in the news, but only to inform people that this has never happened, is not something the president has the authority to do, and every republican immediately went on record to say that there's no way in hell that's going to happen. Then they explained how he put that tweet out 20 minutes before they announced the lowest GDP in US history, in an election year while a strong economy is the only "promises kept" Trump still had 6 months ago. The hardcore Trump base are the only ones taking him seriously, but they're also the ones spamming all the disinformation shit on social media.

They both sold and used it for themselves, moron. Butter, lard, tallow etc. are invaluable stores of nutrition for the winter months.

> Fats and oils supplied caloric density for energy.123 The temperate zones were not suited to the cultivation of the olive, which grew only in the Mediterrenean lands.124 The inhabitants of more northerly regions made do with various animal fats, which functioned both as preservatives and as foodstuffs in their own right. Annapes and Staffelsee kept butter and pork fat among their stores; here again such goods figured into the peasants' annual burdens. De villis also stipulated the annual production and collection of sheep fat and beef tallow.125 King Ina collected butter as one form of hide rent during the seventh century.12

>I succinctly put forward three irrefutable truths

>china made the virus
It originated in China, but it spread to every country on the planet and China has absolutely nothing to do with America having the highest infection rate out of all of them. It's a baseless conspiracy theory that they "made" the virus.
>Trump didn't cover it up and let it spread across the globe, the WHO did
Another baseless conspiracy theory. WHO made some mistakes, but the most retarded thing you can do during a global pandemic is pull out of the largest alliance of international scientists who's entire purpose is to put aside political differences and address things like as global fucking pandemics. If anyone has covered up Covid it's Trump. He's the one who called for less testing, and then ordered hospitals not to report cases to the CDC because he didn't want people to see the real numbers, because it would be, "bad for his ratings".
>Trump didn't say banning travel from China to slow the spread was racist, the Democrats did
He didn't ban travel from China. He banned Chinese nationals from traveling to the US, while still allowing everyone else, essentially just using a global health crisis to put into place another pointless travel ban, months after he was informed about the threat, all the while touting that as being more than anyone else has ever done about the virus. Then he went golfing for a couple months while occasionally tweeting about how you don't have to wear mask.

There's no way in hell this isn't on him, and nobody believes your bullshit anymore.

It doesn't change the fact that it originated in China, who hid the fact that it had emerged.
The WHO absolutely has been running damage control for China, including the suppression of how serious it was until it got to other countries, like say, China's biggest rival, the US.
The ban absolutely applied to everyone from China, except for US citizens overseas. If he hadn't have allowed them back, he would have got shit for it. He can never win with these people. The same people that opposed the ban, which health officials lauded, the Democrats.
The fact that it takes you so much rambling to prevaricate reality into the propaganda you pretend it is is telling.

The virus doesn't care about nationality or ethnicity. Putting in place a travel ban on China because of an outbreak is meaningless if you still allow people to travel from China.
>if he hadn't have allowed them back, he would have got shit for it
And how do explain that infected American cruise ship he didn't want to allow back on land because it would make the covid numbers go up? They set up special, quarantined medical facilities for them, but he still insisted they stew on the ship because "hurr, if they don't disembark they don't count as American covid cases"?

Now read the rest. They would have called him relentlessly if he didn't allow US citizens to come back. And blocking travel from the epicenter of the outbreak is absolutely a good idea.
Because those people were in US waters being treated by US doctors, some of the best in the world. Also, being in US waters, I would assume those numbers are still counted. But an infection will travel through a cruise ship extremely rapidly. Further, we don't know if people coming back from China had it or not, but the ship was confirmed to have multiple cases of wu flu.
I'm not saying Trump handled this great, but Obama would have done no better, I'm sure. I don't agree with the people that refuse to wear a mask either.

I think most people aren't stupid enough to think that getting tested actually causes covid, but I've also talked to people who thought that wearing a mask caused it, so I'm really not sure anymore. On top of that, according to your scenario 1 out of 4 people tested comes back positive, so obviously "if you test 8 you get 2 confirmed cases". Except that that you also get 6 negative cases, so according to your preschool arithmetic we actually get more negative cases the more people we test. Yeah, that's how stupid you people sound.

Royals never ate what we'd call white bread today. Manual sifting of flour only approximates our modern white flour. In practice, it's still quite textured when you compare the color of the crumb to modern white flour breads. A lot of recipes say to blend in a portion of wholemeal with modern white flour to approximate what royals ate.

"What happened" is mechanical sifting of flours and advancements in mass production of breads. Pure white flour is advantageous from an industrial standpoint because it has no germ to go rancid. It ferments rapidly and rises better and more consistently than wholemeal breads. This means that white breads last longer in transit, in storage, on supermarket shelves, and are more attractive at a superficial glance. As a result, manufacturers like it, supply chain managers like it, food retailers like it, and consumers from the early 20th century loved it. This is the exact reason why, as an aside, military hardtack recipes by and large switched from wholemeal flour in the 1700s to white flour in the 1800s. Thus, there is great incentive to encourage the mass consumption of white breads as opposed to wholemeal breads. The fact that royals superficially ate "white flour breads" made half the marketing easy. The other half came due to the sheer convenience that mass produced white breads allowed for the industrial family.

The reason why wholemeal became the dominant 'prestige' flour in the late 20th and early 21st century is down to the same reasons why manually sifted flour was the prestige flour in preindustrial times. Wholemeal is more difficult to work with, harder to rise, and harder to produce consistent results on an industrial scale. Even nowadays, the majority of industrial 'wholemeal' breads have white flour blended in, or a multitude of dough conditioners to get to the same results that white breads are naturally. This means that handmade wholemeal breads cost more.

That was exactly what I was getting at when I brought up the alt-right fags with their khakis and whole, "yes sir, let me quote my constitutional rights while live streaming on youtube" demeanor. It's so fucking disingenuous and transparently irl trolling. It's just fucking insane to me that there have been almost non-stop protests for the past 3 years and people are trying to use that as a reason to re-elect Trump, of all retarded backwards conclusions you could pull from that "apparent coincidence". And of course there is going to be some looting and burning when there is insane civil unrest and massive protests happening in urban centers in every part of the country. It's statistically impossible for that not to happen with a happening this big, and of course the MSM is going to loop footage of a burning trash can for 24 hours - that's supposed to be your line, by the way.

Generic? Not at all. It’s honestly a fantastic book. Sometimes you get a cookbook with great looking, great sounding food, but the actual recipes aren’t properly tested and you have to adjust to actually achieve the proper result. Not in this cookbook, all of the recipes and techniques are on point. It’s written with a a culinary professional n mind too. Highly recommend it.

Yeah, because antifa is totally still a thing you ever see or hear about outside of Trump using it as a scapegoat and labeling it as a terrorist group. I bet you still use "CNN" as an insult because Trump mentioned it once when he first used, "fake news" in reference to a CNN reporter, even though everyone knows they're the moderates of the big three MSM networks, but you people never bring up MSNBC, which everyone knows is the left leaning, SJW network. It's just nothing but talking points and slogans, and it's all so disconnected from reality.

Maybe I'll check it out. I just already have plenty of books covering classical French and don't usually buy celebrity cookbooks. I mean, I have been recommending Alton Brown's first book in beginner cooking threads for years, but literally every recipe in it was tested like crazy and they're all great, even though they're just there as a kind of "practice test" to try the techniques the book is really about.

CNN pretends to be real journalists. MSNBC makes no bones about being political activists.

Also, call them whatever you want, the riots are not random, they are coordinated and deliberate efforts. Just because there isn't a centralized "leader" doesn't mean they don't exist. This isn't the 1800's, people aren't going to just line up in rows with muskets.

It's pretty annoying how blatantly they push certain things and don't talk about others, but they unironically have the best reporting out of the three. If you're at your grandparents' house and there's no internet you should turn the TV to MSNBC if you want to see the news; just turn it off whenever they start talking about identity politics shit.

All mobile phones are made in Asia. In the comic it's an iPhone. Those run from $700 to $1200 new. My phone cost me $150 and it's more than adequate. Shit, it's 1080p and I can do far more on it than an iPhone. Plus, apple uses foxconn which is known as one of the most draconian Chinese companies out there. The ones with suicide nets so the totally not slaves can't even escape via death.
Whoever made the comic is just dumb. I don't hate them for being dumb enough to buy one, just for being dumb enough to make such a nonsensical comic to defend their retardation.

If you want real news you unfortunately need to scour local papers. That was generally the role of larger networks, but c'est la vie. The best I've found off the internet is actually PBS.

As for the riots, you clearly aren't looking very hard. Portland in particular has been near civil war levels with people throwing literal explosives at cops for weeks (several lives and limbs have been lost), and attempting to burn down federal courthouses.

Yeah, so, you remember that whole, "all men are created equal" thing in the declaration of independence? It's kind of been a rallying cry of the civil rights movement? I hate to break it to you, but the guy who wrote that had a fucking shit ton of slaves. It's kind of weird how that works. It's almost as though if he wasn't extremely affluent he never would have gotten the education and opportunity to rise to power and be able to do that whole, "founding father, experimental new democratic republic" thing.
