If I'm in the mood for 40s I try to get a 40 of Old English and a 22oz of Steel Reserve, they complement each other well and the total is still around five bucks. If you really want the most bang for you buck try brewing high grav cider, 30 bucks worth of ingredients can yield 5 gallons of ~13-14%abv booze.

When I wasn't a seasoned drinker steel reserve almost killed me. I'd downed maybe four of them after working outside all day in the southern heat, my buddy came over and we smoked a joint in my swealtering garage, and I just straight up collapsed onto the floor. Totally my fault, should've been hydrating better, but I can't drink that shit anymore

Last malt liquor I had was Colt 45 a few weeks ago and its definitely smoother and not as harsh as Steel Reserve.

40s have always had a stigma. They're gas station purchases just for binge drinking the right amount to get trashed. Often the percent alcohol is higher long before there were ever ICE beers with that extra oomph.

They're ghetto. You're so poor you can't buy a normal case or 6 pack. One or two of things is all you can afford. You can't keep these on hand at home, cold ready to drink because you're living paycheck to paycheck and you shop at a convenience store, no car, no trip to cheaper big brand stores. You live in the moment.

Because they're ghetto, they're marketed to minorities who live in the ghetto, and then it's a repeating pattern at some point, where popularity breeds familiarity and it's economical.
