Jim Murray is the one to watch. He makes big splashes and fucks things up for everyone. Luckily he's been at this for so long that he's looking for novelty foremost, so he's unlikely to come back and name one of your favorite whiskys best in the world.

I hate that there is actually good leaf whisky. It's just that you have to go through so many shit ones to get to them. I had to have tried maybe 20 different ones at a few promotions and liquor store tastings and fucking hell most of it was just bad. Not boring or forgettable, but plain bad.

Swear the only good ones I found so far were Shelter Point and Ploughmans Rye. Lot 40 was the best of the worst on the basis that it tasted decent, just watered down to shit

Take a look at Australian whisky for the total memery experience.
There's tonnes of good stuff. Perhaps even the majority. But if you apply your normal selection criteria you'll come up with nothing. And if you're open enough to try at random, ignoring all of your bias towards age/grain/blending/abv/colouring/filtration/country of origin/finishing/etc, you'll end up destroying those selection criteria and having to sift through more trash even when it comes to scotch, because you'll know there are gems you were overlooking.

I tried one Australian whisky blind, only to find out when I looked to buy it, that it was a blend of 3 year old scotch and 1 year old bourbon. No wonder people put NAS on their bottles, I would never have tried that.

In the videos he demonstrates his knowledge related to whisky, and offers a salesmanship example with every whisky he "reviews." He never says anything bad about any whisky and the most negative thing you'll ever hear him say is it fulfills a niche at a price bracket. He claims taste is purely subjective, whisky is an experience and what matters is how it makes you feel and what company you keep. There are no worse whiskys, just also good whiskys.
That means if you listen to what he says and pick a bottle based upon that, you've done no better than random selection. No curation is happening. The videos are not useful to you.
The other guy is a film nerd. He does a great job and brings a lot of fun to the party. He doesn't know jack shit about whisky though. The whisky tribe channel is more focused on this guys memes.

I've done well with Horst's recommendations from whisky.com. You kind of have to read him though, because instead of saying something negative he just gets super terse.
His son has been set up for failure though, and it's looking like he's starting to take over the channel.

To be fair I only really look at sale prices. The sale prices are certainly up here, and there's a fair few token 5c off sales and "we put a sticker on it and hiked the price up" sales.

It makes it smell nicer at the cost of being harder to drink out of. That said smell is a recognition thing, so after smelling it once you don't need the glass anymore. Knob Creek Smoked Maple is the bees knees. It tastes like whiskey with maple syrup and not the other way around and the smokiness is nice. It is intensely flavored but not cloyingly sweet and it's got kick at 90 proof unlike most flavored whiskies.

i drink whiskey and enjoy it, but the nature of whiskey categories and the miles of red tape that regulates them means that most labels within a certain category will taste very samey. compare that to rum which, due to looser regulations, has a much broader range. the downside of course is the countless meme rums and a flimsy system of categorisation.

what are the downsides of diluting exactly? as far as i know, distillers dilute to their desired proof, so i didnt think it would mar the drink at all. in my experience, it hasnt
