It's actually from the northeast.
Southerners love their veggies so much, so they co-opted it. I grew up among very good cooks in my family, with grandmas that had butter beans, lima beans, and a bunch of heirloom beans going at the freezer at all times, and corn that was shucked back on the porch, or snap peas snapped out by the grandkids by the brown paper bag all whining and complaining, etc. Trust me when it's not actually Southern, just has southern ingredients and we make it too :P Think of it as a staple on the Northern thanksgiving table, though right up there with the summer indian corn pudding or the Colonial Spoonbread. Narrangannsett indians named it (Rhode Is tribe or thereabouts, and a good beer!)

It's alright, grew up eating soul food. Most black people don't know how to make true soul food cause most niggas can't cook for shit and I'll die by this.
