I much prefer the thinner, more oily donuts. Cake donuts are too doughy. Crullers and the like are where it's at

buy a bag of flour
pour the flour on something
add (a lot of) sugar, yeast, yogurt
use your hands to form a dough
work until maluable
leave it alone for 20+ minutes
go to your pantry
grab vegtable oil and a deep pot
heat oil to whatever the fuck
flatten your dough
take the lid of a cup and cut some circles
take those circles and punch a hole in them
toss in oil till LIGHT brown
place on a strainer
ready a bowl of powdered sugar / chocolate
dip the donuts

easy extremely large mess donuts ready for you to think about why you didn't just buy them

the basic, americanized version? i'm not sure what style you're referring to.
but yeah, if by doughy you mean too cakey and thick, totally, but that's just my taste. but i usually associate the description 'doughy' with something uncooked - doughy without the crispness of heat.
