They're generally lumped together as digestifs. You see a lot of brandy, stuff like port wine, herbal liquers, etc. often branded as an aid to the digestion, but it's mostly about having a pleasant and not too harsh alcohol after your meal. Sometimes it's served with dessert, sometimes with fruit, sometimes on its own.

honestly I never found fernet disgusting at all.

It's an incredibly complex liquor, any direction you mix it brings out a new flavor. If you drink it straight, imo the licorice and minty notes come out the best. If you mix it with something sweet you get more of the tobacco flavor. Mix it with mescal and you get floral notes.

I love it straight, but I disagree against purists who are against mixing it because it allows you to isolate different flavors. Italian herbal liqueurs are the best thing in the world.

Aw man, those tiny paper-wrapped bottles! I loved those.
Yeah, herb liqueurs are great for topping off a slightly heavier than usual meal.
There's a restaurant in LA where you can order three shots of (different) digestive bitters instead of dessert. Shit was cashmonay.

i think he's referring to refeeding syndrome problems. If you break a 4 day or longer fast with large amounts of rich foods you can crash your mineral levels because the body rushes to reproduce all of the shit it was missing out on and this can cause cardiac arrest.

If you want to fast longer than 3 days, you need to take your refeeding very slow unless you have been doing it a long time. Your body will absolutely adapt to feast and famine cycles and people who regularly do 5 day fasts, 1 week fasts/snake diet have far fewer issues with refeeding. If you're doing a weeklong fast without building up to it, first day you refeed should just be like broth, maybe a very light salad and some fruit and then you work your way back to a normal diet over 2-3 days.

However after just 3 days, the worst you will get is indigestion when binging post fast unless your body is very unprepared for it. I do 24 hour fasts 2 days a week and one 3 day fast per month for the past year so my body is well adapted. It was pure fucking misery the first two refeeds I did, but now it's just manageable discomfort.

I'm Italian and never heard of mixing Fernet with coffee, however it's popular mixing it with Sambuca and a coffee bean.

Coffee with added liquor is called "corretto" (corretto with [liquor]) and the coffee bean is called "mosca" (fly).

Another popular liquor that go in the caffè corretto is the grappa.

When you're home you add the liquor straight to your espresso but at the bar most of the times they serve you the regular espresso with the alcoholic on the side that you can pour in the coffee.
