Does this board ever have a BBQ general thread? I was staying with a friend for a few months because I lost my job due to corona and we grilled almost every night. Now that I'm back on my feet with a job and my own place again I'd like to purchase a grill. What would you guys recommend? I've read on other forums that charcoal is the best and Weber is the best, but I kinda like the ease of use and convenience that propane offers. Thinking of buying an old used one and trying to fix it up but I've also heard that part replacement parts can add up fast and you need a good number of tools, which I don't have.

Maybe BBQ general?

You will regret any sort of restoration project. Buy a new one with a warranty. I like my akorn charcoal grill/smoker combo, personally.

I love BBQ and wish there were more threads about it.
OP, if you're new to grilling I'd recommend a gas grill to start with. Easy temperature control and no fire management so you can just focus on cooking good food. If you're doing longer cooks get a smoke tube to get some of that smoky flavor you're missing out on with propane. Wouldn't bother with a restoration but if money is an issue watch craigslist, you might get lucky and find somebody moving or something who needs to get rid of a good used grill for a decent price.
Pic somewhat related, it's a brisket flat I smoked for the 4th.

Too young and poor to own a grill, but whats the point of using propane for grilling? I thought grilling was to get the smokey flavor. Otherwise i'd just use a pan

About to enter the world of smoking soon.

Gonna buy a Weber Smokey Mountain but damn it's $200 for something I've never tried before. Better be worth it.

Do you want to grill, smoke or barbecue? They are three different cooking techniques. Grill is high heat, traditional barbecue is low heat and smoke is low or no heat.

have an master built electric smoker like one shown. Save a few bucks and skip the glass and digital features. Easy to use and the results are consistent. Only nuisance is that you have to restock the smoke wood about every hour. Have and eastern European friend who cold smoked meat for a week in one of these last winter.

The smoke changes the color of the meat. The red ring is how far down the smoke was able to penetrate the surface.
