Sometimes in life, convenience is worth the extra nickel.
When it comes to food, where do you draw the line? Personally, I find beans to be a circumstance where prepared cans are worth it over having to cook dried raw ones. The effort one needs to put in is just too great for beans, especially when delicious canned ones are so cheap.

How about you? What do you make from scratch vs buy pre-prepared?

>effort

Pumpkin filling is another example that comes to mind. You won't find me making it from scratch when for a buck and change you can get a can of it.

I buy a lot of tomato products in cans.
other than that, I can't think of anything else.

yeah same. Don't waste 'fresh' tomatoes that way if you end up not using all of em and they sit too long getting old and rotten.

Hell, I grow up in an area famous for tomatoes, and summer is amazing, but it's still mostly flavorless shit tomatoes the rest of the year. Canned are usually the way to go for sauces outside of summer.

how about corn tortillas? Worth it to get a press + nixtamalizatized masa & make em over buying those cheap packs of 30 at the store?

Made dumplings for scratch. Were ok. Could buy a tray of authentic Chinese ones for $2. Never again will make them

I’ll just throw down with these:
Tomatoes
Beans
Corn
Salmon sometimes
Pineapple

Things like that.

those huge cartons of pre-made 'restaurant style' hashbrown mixes are tempting. Living alone it's annoying to make like... one potato's worth of hash browns at a time. And I've found they don't work well as leftovers

refried beans though (not OP btw), do require extra effort beyond boiling and mashing. Mine never turn out very good and a can of refried beans is just too convienent to keep trying

I can see the reasoning for most of these other than pineapple and salmon/tuna. They both have their own merits and uses I think, but they are almost nothing like their fresh versions.

and pick out the rocks in your container of dry beans, and season, and clean the cookware you used... I'd rather pay the $0.90 for a can

Look at Mr. Moneybags over here. I spend like $0.49 on the generic brand at Kroger.

on the other hand, crusts (pizza/pie/whatever) are worth it to make at home

>> No.14359176

The refrigerated ones are passable, but you do notice the difference. Graham cracker crusts aren't worth the effort, though. Honestly the way they pack them makes the texture better with store bought. Homemade graham cracker crust is better as a topping like on an apple crisp.

>> No.14359179

>>14359171
Not really graham cracker crust. Unless you keep graham crackers for other reasons, though.
