when does a cake stop being a cake?

When you stop being able to eat the majority of it.

>"Cake" is only 5% cake and the other 95% is rice crispy treats, fondant (which feels and tastes so bad people actually take it off before eating the cake), and wooden planks to hold it all together
This is why I never liked watching those cake-making shows.

If less than 90% of it (both by volume and by mass) is edible/palatable (fondant excepted, fuck fondant) then it is no longer cake and is now an art piece using food as a medium.

The core definition of "cake" is "big lump of something."

>cheesecake
>sugar
A type-I diabetic buddy of mine makes and eats cheesecakes and doesn’t even use fake sugar. Most of cheesecakes’ flavor comes from the giant gobs of fat, not sugar.

>type-I diabetic
there's a pretty lulz study that show'd a large percentage of people claiming to be type-1 diabetics were actually type-2

Gelatin should only be acceptible as a thin layer to hold fruits together and if something isn´t edible or just hard sugars then don´t put it on a cake.

So pretty much no marsipan or fruits not a cake.

when its over 50% gelatine and/or fondant.

I'd get it if the cake was just decorative, though thats also kind of a waste, but its ridiculous when they actually expect people to stomach a thick ass layer of gross chalky fondant around everything, and then you end up just having to peel it off and throw it in the trash.

I love fondant, it's the best part of the cake since those "fancy" looking cakes taste like cartridge
