A cheeseburger, fries, a coke, and a milkshake.
Ribs with coleslaw. Saucy wings dipped in ranch. A bucket of fried chicken.
A NY strip with a side of mashed potatoes with gravy, asparagus, and broccoli.
Country fried steak with gravy and a side of biscuits.
A bowl of mac and cheese. A meatloaf with a side of collared greens.
A hot dog grilled with a bag of chips. A pepperoni pizza with extra cheese, NY style.
Bacon, sausage links, two eggs (scrambled), and two slices of toast with butter and jam.
Donuts and a cup of coffee, black with some cream and sugar.
Thanksgiving turkey with stuffing, a casserole, and chased down by pumpkin and apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.
Spicy red bean chili topped with shredded cheese and sour cream, with crackers or toast to dip into it.
Popcorn with extra butter, a salted pretzel with mustard, corn dogs, nachos with cheese, salsa, and jalapenos, and a box of whoppers or a bag of M&Ms after, maybe some cotton candy.
Grilled shrimp on a hoagie with spinach, onion, and tartar sauce. An Italian sub.

There are two problems with American cuisine: first, that it draws from a lot of different cultures but does things very differently, and secondly that the US's cultural reach is so wide that your friend probably has experienced American cuisine with his own local twist no matter what part of the world he's in. It's very hard to impress other people with American cuisine when they've virtually grown up with it across the globe.

>It's very hard to impress other people with American cuisine when they've virtually grown up with it across the globe.

Pretty much. I recall reading something a few years ago that was some (American) guy discussing his experiences traveling outside the USA. He saw American brands and restaurants and movies and so on and so on EVERYWHERE. And he had an epiphany: A lot of cultures that resent or hate America don't hate the USA because there's a culture war: They hate the USA because the culture war is over, and we won.

Loose meat sandwiches (maid-rite)
breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches
deep fried cheese curds
juicy lucy (cheeseburger variant)
lacy edge burger (precursor to smash burgers)
italian beef sandwiches (chicagoland, broadly a hybrid of a french dip and a cheesesteak)

... so pretty much, no. Midwest was largely settled by european immigrants who had subsistence food, not cuisine.
You may find interesting local variations on a theme, but it will all be broadly recognizeable.

Biscuits and gravy.
Fried bologna sandwich.
The NY bodega sandwich.
Caesar salad, Waldorf salad... probably a few others.
Those potluck cheesy potatoes. They're awesome; I don't care who you are.
Cincinnati chili over spaghetti.
Eventually, you're going to have to make a trip to Waffle House. Have some suggestions ready before you go in.
Hot Brown sandwich.

Maybe it isn't high cuisine, but if you want to get the flavor of a place... eat the everyday food, not the fancy food.
