Because exercise is an inefficient method of burning calories.

At 80-90% of max effort (measured by heart rate) an average adult can burn in the region of 5-7 calories per minute.
That means an hour of pretty strenuous exercise could burn 300 to 420 calories.
A pound of fat contains 3500 calories, so if you did one hour of strenuous exercise a day it would take between 9 to 12 days to lose one pound.

Conversely, by adjusting your diet you can very easily run a 1000 calorie deficit per day and lose 2 pounds a week.

Not saying you shouldn't exercise. Its important for fitness and general well-being. Just don't expect to lose significant amounts of weight unless you do multiple hours of cardio multiple times a week.

Pretty much this. I work 4x 13h shifts per week plus frequent overtime and or on call. I don't have a lot of time to go for a 2 hour walk a few times per week. I used to hit a local gym on the way home from my last shift and then again on my day off but now that's closed because of the mass panic. Honestly learning to cook and eating healthier has made me realize how easy it is to get away with small bullshit here and there. I count my calories and right now I'm sitting here with about 200 left. I've already eaten a pound of protein (chicken breast), a pound of veggies and a pound of fruit for the day so, along with a protein shake I made for lunch, I've pretty much hit all my macro goals for the day.
