I just bought two small packages cause it's actually kinda cheap, wonder how it tastes like. What do you recommend I use it for?

Raw tofu gross because it is watery and bland. Therefore you want to squeeze it. Than put some salt or oriental dressing. You can stir fry it if you want to

Desserts for silken tofu, aburaage or stir-frying it for firm are my go-to.
Raw taste is too subtle at first for plain tofu, some people learn to like it with time. I'm not a big fan of the plain one but black forest tofu is something I can hardly stop myself from eating out of a pack, that shit is delicious.

I like to buy mozzarella in brine, eat the mozza, add a little pepper flake, and brine firm tofu in the leftover juice. Leave it for a week and it gets very firm and tastes like the cheese. Yes, this is non-standard.

tofu is filler and tastes like tofu. it's just something to add protein to meal when you are poor, it takes on the flavors of every thing else it is mixed with. I use it occasionally but it's not a main because it's boring and one dimensional.

if OP actually bought silk tofu, you cannot squeeze silk tofu, it'll just disintegrate into mush

these are only good in soups, steaming or mapo tofu

Ginger beef and tofu stir fry
It's basicly plain carbs with protein like white bread or rice meaning you need to make something else the tasty part of the dish.
Best thing is if you make a sauce it flavors really well so do meat and tofu stirfry for the best flavors.
Don't do what white middle aged mom's do and attempt to cook a turkey out of tofu and then pretend to think its the same. Fake tofu meat is nasty.
Also bean curd is pretty great.

I have been cooking with tofu a lot more since I've been too lazy to defrost the meat that I have. I've been putting it in vegetable curry, cream soups, and etc. I fried it today in some potato starch and coated it in a soy sauce sauce with 4 different types of chillis in it.

>> No.14236947

>>14234941
I usually throw it in stir fry, you just need to make sure to dry it first. I just got some that I plan on putting into so miso soup, it'll be my first time making it. Kind of gonna be winging it since the dashi powder I bought has instructions entirely in Japanese.

>> No.14236992

Not enough people asked what type of tofu OP has, despite this mattering greatly in how to properly prepare a dish with it. Either assuming it was the silky tofu in the picture he could have gotten off Google by just googling "tofu" or assuming it was a firmer variety.
I give you all failing grades.

drain water, cut in cubes, put in a bowl.

Add per half container of tofu in any order:
1tbsp Chinese black vinegar
1tbsp light soy sauce
1/2 green onion thinly sliced
1tbsp sesame oil
1/2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
1/2 clove micro-planned garlic
pinch of sugar
1tbsp finely minced ginger
large pinch of freshly cracked Sichuan peppers

Garnish:
Coriander

optional :
Fresh hot peppers finely chopped
Fish sauce (if you want a Thai flair to it, reduce soy especially if you don't use the light version)

Just fucking pile it up on the tofu in a bowl, don't stir the tofu will get fucked up. eat with a spoon, the Chinese ones if you're fancy.

if its too much sauce, slurp it up it tastes good. dump some potstickers or steamed dumplings in the same sauce, coincidentally this makes a great dumpling side dish.

Use the same sauce but sub tofu for smashed cucumbers that you've salted for like 15 minutes before you rinsed them.

I like using tofu in chinese cooking if that's what you're asking. I can't make mapo tofu without tofu.
But outside of chinese cooking no, I don't really have a use for tofu.

What hoops? Tofu naturally absorbs the flavor of anything you cook it with.

I went to a Cheap chinese buffet last year and they had a GIANT block of soft tofu that was covered in this spicy sauce that I loved. I went back for a second scoop. Never did figure out what the sauce was, other than "generic chinese sauce" but it was amazing. Would love to have more of that in my life.

It tastes like shit if you don't add flavors to cover it up. The fact that it takes on other flavors easily is just the silver lining to the shit cloud.

If it's silken tofu use it in a miso soup with some wakame. You can easily cheat a broth by buying kombu and bonito flakes (if you're non veggie) and using a stock cube and having the broth on a v low simmer for ~10-15 mins.

Most types of tofu (maybe even silken) also work for tofu with rice. Just boil some rice and warm the tofu up in hot, near-boiling water. Then get some lao gan ma (this is essential and is the tastiest shit, google it) and just eat all together. Add some zha cai (or any other asian pickled veg, even kimchi), optional but makes it more interesting.
