My mother used to make rhubarb crumble when we first moved into our home - the garden was wild and messy and just happened to have a few growing there, I assume from a previous owner that had started before the thing (and the house, at the time) fell into ruin. It was honestly a favourite childhood treat - tart and sweet and very delicious. I generally never think of rhubarb, but when it comes up, I know that no matter what tastelets say, it can make a damn good dessert that absolutely delivers on taste and meal satisfaction.

Growing up in northern ontario, everybody who was outdoorsy, or who had a camp shilled rhubarb, myself included. It's got a unique nice flaour if you find a good stalk and mix it with sugar, but aside from that it's just something that grows locally that you can happen to eat, not worth buying.

>it's just something that grows locally that you can happen to eat, not worth buying
That's a good way of putting it, rhubarb is overpriced if you're buying it in the store. The flipside is that it's a fairly vigorous perennial plant that you can easily grow in parts of your yard where vegetables won't take or aren't practical. It's a no-brainer for gardening for how little effort you need to put into it.

>>14179850
The taste is tart and fruity so it just makes sense that it's treated as a fruit in cooking, much like many fruits like tomatoes are treated as vegetables.
