When the majority of people are malnourished, then being obese can be seen as something positive. When the majority of people have a constant supply of food, then being obese just shows you aren't that interested in your physical health, you're ignorant, or lack willpower, because constantly being obese ends up causing a lot of health problems and a shorter lifespan.

One of the episodes of that 600lbs life reality show featured a homeless person just straight up living in a van. The wealthier ones were also just like living in trailers or had to blow all their fucking money moving to texas for a few months.

Because: (1) Most Westerners are centuries separated from the last time they faced true hunger; (2) Food has become more fattening, to the point that being overweight is the norm, especially for poor people; (3) Westerners have put the most thought into human aesthetics, so wealthy people will want to chase those ideals rather than being content with fatness; (4) This mindset puts a lot of emphasis on social status, rather than someone's intrinsic value; (5) Obesity is straight up common these days, especially in the West, so there's no reason to give it positive connotations of exclusivity and status.
