Blue Bell is the best balance of affordability, quality, and variety. Not the best ice cream money can buy, but definitely the best bang for your buck. They're also quite generous with mix-ins and seem to always have new flavors coming out, including seasonal flavors.

I buy Walmart's "Great Value Vanilla Iced Milk". It doesn't get as hard as legit iced cream so it's like soft serve without the hassle. I effectively make my own DQ Blizzards with it. Also as a reason that isn't a real reason, it's less fatty so "healthier".

Tastes half decent and I always make my own "extras" (roasted nuts, brownie, chocolate shavings, sauces, etc) that would hide the taste of amazing iced cream anyways. Plus it's like five Canadian Fun Bux for a gallon.

I knew they were hippies but I didn't realize how insane they were until the Trump election when they and some other food companies I used to buy from turned explicitly political. The website I bought my spices from sent out a mass e-mail lecturing anyone who may have voted for Trump, tell them they voted for a racist and are making the world less inclusive or whatever, and to never buy their spices again (and I never did). Making your own is surprisingly easy. If you want an ice cream that doesn't need a mixer just fold in whipped cream into a can of sweetened condensed milk and put in a loaf pan in your freezer. You can make any flavor just by mixing stuff in before you freeze it. I know it's not fancy but it's better than store bought.

I don't do refined sugar anymore so I make mine from whipped coconut cream or frozen bananas.
