Basically it's an alcoholic Mongolian/Central Asian drink made from fermented mares milk. Ever since I started learning more about it I've been curious to try it, but I've yet to find any stores on the internet or in the US where I can buy some. Anyone know where I can get some?

Gotta use raw milk and a starter culture to promote the growth of the right kinds of yeast and bacteria.

Mongols do their own thing with horse stomachs or whatever, but you could accomplish the same thing by adding sourdough starter to raw milk.

Lmao do not do this

OP kumis tastes horrible. To make it, horse riders fill a horse skin bag with mare milk and churn it daily for gos knows how long until its fermented.

How does it ferment enough to contain a substantial amount of alcohol while kefir doesn't? Or does it contain the same miniscule amount kefir does?

>>14134573
Lactose is not fermentable by normal yeast that's used to make most alcohol

It's not as an efficient ethanol producer as Saccharomyces cerevisiae used in beermaking, but it's not terrible either.
