Used to really love this place as a kid. Nostalgic and predictable. The candy and toys and shit you can shop around for while you wait for your table was always a treat. The peg board games and checkers and rocking chairs made this place very kid friendly. These days, as an adult, the food is nothing special so I don't go often, but I still enjoy it when I find myself there.

I like it a lot for a weekend breakfast before grocery shopping. You can get biscuits and gravy with bacon and some pulpy fresh OJ for around $6-7. For a few bucks more you can toss Eggs or some pancakes in.

The food isn't great but its consistently decent/good. I've never gone and had a bad experience, but never had one that was amazing. Also I find the quality doesn't vary much between locations

Also, hashbrown casserole is truly the GOAT.

Pretty accurate. Their biscuits and gravy isn't worth fucking with, but their fried stuff is always on point. I usually end up getting breakfast food, so I can't speak much on the other menus. Grits area always good, but that's probably because it's all the same instant cheap shit and you can't really fuck them up.

It heavily depends on which location you go to. When I was younger we had a cracker barrel in my town that was disgusting. I was eating there once and when I went to get dessert I literally saw a cockroach crawling around in the brownies and some old man standing next to me told me not to worry about it because it was just a little one. I used to work for a food redistributor, not sysco but we sold to and purchased from them all the time. The absolute majority of our customers were restuarants, and the majority of those restaurants were the "small, hole in the wall, SOULFUL" restaurants hipsters love to fellate all day. One of the perks of working there was I could buy food at distributor prices, and now that I know just how much shit comes premade, not just in stores but literally ALL restaurants (chain or otherwise), I never eat out anymore. Ironically, the only places that sometimes cook their own food is fast food chains like KFC.

Funnily enough, we used to bulk ship the chicken patties/fillets/nuggets with burger king logos to prisons. Burger king food is literally prison food, lol. Correctional facilities would buy that shit by the truckload.

I believe all of this. I've seen Sysco trucks pulling to park at every local restaurant around here. We're to a place in the restaurant/food industry where efficiency and logistics is king over every other consideration. Only large fast food franchises owned by conglomerates like Yum! Brands have the scale to effectively become their own supply chain down to the franchise's kitchen. I've looked up SysCo's catalog a few times in the past and they really run the gamut from base bulk ingredients like potatoes and onion to cheap packaged slop 'o shit all the way up to fancy 3-Star entrees. The problem I have is you can never be sure whether restaurants are ordering base ingredients and cooking anything themselves fresh or reheating frozen tubs/container.

I can say with certainty, at least for my distribution company, there wasn't a single customer on our list that wasn't buying premade products. Even when they buy base ingredients, they're canned/frozen, and always alongside premade entrees. And keep in mind, even though our company was fairly small, we shipped to every state in the union and nearly all of our products were identical to sysco.

If you were to take a picture of a random meal in really any restaurant, I could point out at least a few portions of it that were premade. Even fucking potato chips get shipped frozen in bulk, I didn't even know you could freeze potato chips.

Unfortunate fact of the matter is that it's just too cost effective. Restaurants can support a menu 3 pages long because all their shit comes from a factory, and if they get a good deal, they can charge you 10 bucks a plate and still make a profit. That's why I'm in the "sorry not sorry" phase of watching all the local """restaurants""" close down to covid, I know 99% of what they spit out is microwaved.

Would be a lot better if restaurants returned to smaller, specialized menus actually made in house. You could get a decent price point and use actual ingredients because you're not trying to have 3 different menus all day with vegan options and kiddie meals and desserts and etc etc. Its not just diners or holes in the wall either, it's everywhere, and if they're not buying directly from sysco or a company like mine, they're buying from a company that buys from us. Fucking poisonous.
