I used to drink gin fairly often in university but then just kinda stopped. Recently I bought a bottle of pic related and remembered how much I enjoyed it. I have no idea if this is quality gin or not, it's just what I used to get. Normally I drink it with soda water and half a lemon squeezed into it. Also sometimes with tonic but I rarely have it on-hand.

Any recommendations for good gin brands and also good drinks to mix?
>hurr just google it
Yeah and get a list of 50 meme drinks that all require different ingredients, no thanks. I want personal reccomendations.

I always post this brand but, I don't care. I really recommend it. I know friends that mix their gin with other lemon sodas suchas 7Up or Sprite.

My own recomendations would be

1 - Edinburgh Gin
2- Hendricks
3 - Ely Gin (Some of their flavoured gins are the very best on the market in my opinion, if you like thtat sort of thing)

Honourable mentions also to Eden Mill, Caorunn and Tanqueray No.10 at a push.

I've never found anything to mix well with gin other than tonic water.

Hayman's Old Tom Gin is my favorite in the lower price point. Great taste and not too juniper forward to drown out the other herbs.

I recommend Roku gin

Also mixing gin and ginger ale is pretty nice
Tonic is still the best tho

I also reccomend Roku, its absolutely fantastic. so is Nikkas Japanese gin. They're quite different from each other but both just great.

OP if you have it you can make a really nice green tea gin by taking good green tea leaves, I use gokujo hojicha whole leaves, and let them steep in 3-4 shots worth of gin for about 10-25min (longer is stronger, but more bitter). then strain and mix as you'd see fit for a G and T or maybe a gin with lemon soda water. really good stuff.

also black berry syrup I find goes good with gin. Does anyone have a good recommendation for Elderberry gin?

Thanks for the suggestions, but all except one didn't mention why. I notice they are all from different countries. Are there regional variations with gin?

I assume you mean dried green tea leaves? I do have jasmine green tea on hand, would that work do you think or would the jasmine overpower the gin flavour?

>> No.14089140

>>14089093
It depends what you mean on regional. Like if certain areas just by default have slightly different gin, or do you mean how when a country and people in it use their local ingredients to make something that then tastes good?

Bombay Sapphire imo is one of the better cheap gins. Avoid Gordons and Beefeater.
Sipsmiths is one of the best in the £20 price range I think.
Some other good ones mentioned iit; Hendricks, Caorunn, Roku, all £20-£30 iirc.
Sloe Gin is well worth trying as well. Again the Sipsmiths is very good for the price.
I've just opened a bottle of pic related. It's a classic London Dry, but the addition of licorice gives it a really nice cooling sensation in the mouth, without actually tasting overly of licorice. But it seems to increase the crispness of the overall G&T.
Not sure I can taste any hops in it but whatever. It's very nice, and I like the label.

Ingredients is what I had in mind. I know that gin uses a lot of muted ingredients so I would imagine that there is a lot of room for variation there. I was wondering if it has the same kind of regional distinction as say, whisky vs. whiskey vs. bourbon etc.

Gin sour is a base thing, where it's literally sugar, gin and lemon or lime. Martini if you can get Dry vermouth. If you're willing to shell out a bit more, the Negroni is up there. Last Word is fun but relies on having multiple liqueurs you might not have. After that you can do variations on stuff. Ever had a gin old fashioned? Surprisingly nice. There's tons of gin sour variations where you substitute the simple syrup for a more complex one like raspberry syrup (Clover Club), or maraschino liqueur and creme de violette (Aviation), for instance. Negroni you can spin it any way you like it if you have a preferred liqueur.

Flavored seltzer water goes well with gin. Basically the same as mixing with something like Sprite minus the extra calories, if you're trying to minimize calorie intake.

Yes.

I think jasemine tea leaves would actually be great in it. pour some shots into a jar, put the tea in for 10min, taste, then see if it's strong enough for you and increase by 10 extra min each time until it's the way you like. then drink straight up or over ice or however else you might want

I know you've got a ton of recommendations already, but I'd like to second Hendricks, and also suggest Botanist.
They're both scottish gins, and they're both very botanical, lots of beautiful herbal and refreshing flavors, excellent for sipping and cocktails. These are on the expensive side, but both are worth it, in my opinion. I'd give the edge to Hendrick's if you're just going for one.

As for cocktails, the Negroni is an all-time classic. Equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. It's refreshing, appetizing, and extremely simple to make (which also means you can fuck with it in fun ways). This is sort of a pain in the ass, because you have to buy Campari which you may not use for ANY other drinks, and sweet vermouth which is almost as rare. It's my favorite drink of all time, though, so I'd still recommend it. A tom collins is an easier classic which is great because it enhances, rather than subduing, the natural flavors and botanicals of gin. It's 3 parts gin, 2 parts fresh lemon juice, 1 part sugar, and 4 parts carbonated water.

Seconding Botanist. I've never explored gin much but went for the Botanist on a whim and it's basically just that and Woodford Reserve that I drink now. The Botanist is so pleasantly floral and aromatic.

It's been recommended a few times already but you can't beat Hendricks (at least in the "cheap" premium category). A nice pour of Hendricks on the rocks with a cucumber slice in there... Damn, I can just feel summer already.
