I think it's a situational comfort/awareness thing. Drinking the booze you know means you aren't really paying attention to the drink and so are more focussed on the drunk. However, when it's an unfamiliar drink you ma be paying more attention to the act of drinking itself and become caught unawares by the creeping intoxication.
