/wine/ thread - recent purchases edition

What have you bought recently? Drinking now or cellaring?

I'm really excited to drink my Chave Saint-Joseph, most of his wines are brutally expensive so it was nice that I could find one that was somewhat affordable. Also excited to drink that Bourgueil, never had a wine from the appellation before.

I would say the opposite. Wines with no added sufites often turn completely volatile after they're open for a day, whereas those that do seem to hold up. I haven't cellared any no added sulfite wines long-term though so I can't make that judgement. It also doesn't help that most no added sulfite wine doesn't have the structure to age.

I don't see why something has to have microbes in it to properly develop.

Yes of course after you open a wine which hasn't been killed with a chemical preservative, it will spoil quickly.

Not sure what your point is here. It's like pointing out that a good English cheddar isn't shelf stable like your Velveeta so it must be worse.

I really love the Duckhorn sauv blanc but can't justify spending $60 on two bottles. Maybe when I'm older.

Similar price point, but very very good: Blindfold white blend from the prisoner. Highly recommend.

You guys are missing out on the real issue here: quality control/sanitation up to the point of bottling. If you're running a wine making op with surgical tier cleanliness on the gear, the humans, and the fruit, instead of just going by the seat of your pants and blasting everything with chemicals just in case, you're less likely to have a problem if you bottle without sulfur. The odds are still higher than if you killed the wine, but when you're putting that level of effort into it, you're also probably making pretty good quality stuff in every other respect

If you're broke and afraid to take chances you'll just end up drinking same-ish clone wines marketed towards people who think just like you do. Take some chances and try weird things. Spend a little more than you're comfortable spending sometimes. It will reward you.

That's the thing though, very very few producers are that clean and sort fruit that meticulously to be able to get away with no sulphur. Don't get me wrong, I like the funk and slight volatility you often get our of no added sulphites, but often they just can't age well. I like bottle variation too, but not when I might buy a bottle that's straight vinegar.

Male wine drinker here. It’s funny buying a good Bordeaux. I usually get asked who I’m buying it for, Wife? Mother? Sister? Surely it can’t be for yourself. Then when I tell it’s for me, I get a shocked look. They recover and decide to ‘play along’ with me. Then they start telling me lots of things I know I about wine.
It’s at this point, if I can be bothered, I go through their shelves and tell them all the ones I’ve tasted and why I like them or not. Which regions I prefer, big up Marlborough, and why I’m not a fan of Californian and 100% prefer Spanish.
Now is when I think they feel bad. Because they always offer me loads of samples. I can usually free taste like 4/5 different ones min on every visit.
Having said that met a really nice man last time through the airport who was giving out Schlumberger samples. We had a great chat. He was awesome.
Now girls at bars when you order a large white find you immediately intriguing. They watch you take a sip. I think they are waiting to see if you make a face. When you look pleased then they have their in to strike up a conversation.
I don’t know a lot of other male wine drinkers but I wish I did. I can only go on so many tasting sessions with girls.

Chilean wines tend to be pretty non-interventionalist, since chile has almost none of the pest problems that the rest of the wine-growing world has. That being said, really good chilean wines are hard to get in the states, so you'll mostly find 15-20 dollar blends and chardonnays. Purple Angel and Don Melchor are about the only reliably-great higher end chilean wines you will find in the states.

Beronia (like some other riojas) sits on their wines for some time before releasing - more than the regulatory minimum - so they're quite soft comparatively speaking. I believe their current release Gran Reserva is the 2009, for example.

Two bottles of wine: Neropasso Originale Biscardo (2017) and Principe Del Sole Sangiovese (vintage 2013) - both supposedly decent for their price, tho I haven't looked them up, so I wouldn't really know.
Soberano Solera "Spanish brandy" (no date on the bottle/label, but the excise stamp says 2009). It's only 36% vol, tho.
Some kind of XO French cognac ("fine champagne cognac") that I know nothing about except the fact that it should be legit, since the company that presented it to me specializes in fancy packed fancy spirits and drinks and they would not give out crap.

Also at least the Germans put the varietal of the wine on their label, can't be said for the majority of other European wines.

Any winemakers here? I'd like to understand something. Shitty wine often has a ton of sugar added, to the point where it tastes bad. Why can't they add a lot of acid to balance things out? Or is this something they do? Why can I often taste "unbalanced sugar" but not "unbalanced acidity"?

When I make lemonade at home it's really not all that hard to get the balance right, is there some legal or technical reason why companies making shit wine (like california stuff or aussie stuff) can't just dump some extra acid powder in the vat until it's drinkable?

Because the people who make 'bad' wine are actually making wine very meticulously designed to sell in massive quantities to people who know nothing about wine. correct, but legally all wines classified as GG must be trocken (less than 10g/l residual sweetness

>Issues in regard to Grosse Gewächse about which growers should be thinking (and consumers, too, be aware) include:

>1) Insisting on legal Trockenheit invites (and indeed has repeatedly engendered) the following:

>a. Rieslings "wrestled" to below 10 grams of residual sugar by yeasting, warming, blending, and so on that would have tasted better (and, in particular, better balanced) had they not been wrestled via yeasting, etc.*

>b. Dearth of Rieslings in the (roughly) 10–13 grams of residual sugar range (envisioned and enshrined, incidentally, in the Rheingau "Erste Gewächse"—the only legally protected category of its sort), a range that correspond to or correlated with…

>i. the behavior of many Riesling musts when left to their own devices.

>ii. a notably high percentage of the great "dry" wines from the late-19th-to-early-20th-century heyday of German Riesling, to which those who thought up Grosses Gewächs appeal in establishing the category.**

>iii. a level of hidden sweetness that proves uncannily food-friendly and takes Riesling places where frankly most of the world's utterly dry wines offer no synergy.***

Although the person in this article argues that because of the intensity of GG wines, the hard limit on residual should be removed or at least lessened.

Why are wines outside Europe usually made with only one variety of grape?

>> No.14040876

>>14040813
They're not, but more on this later. The first "respectable" wines to make a splash internationally were sold under varietal names because at the time those regions had no name recognition and were generally associated with low quality wines made with bulk mystery grapes.

Once they had made an impression, there remained a perception that wine from those areas that had the kind of grape written on the label were higher quality, whether true or not. The varietal became the brand, it's gotten so ridiculous that big companies make "pinot noir" that is doctored up to taste more like syrah because it turns out a lot of people don't ACTUALLY like pinot noir, they like the IMAGE of pinot noir.

The fact is American wine is the wild west, not unlike China's economic miracle. Yes there are amazing wines from the US, much like how you can obtain amazing high tech from China, but it's buyer beware. You literally have to memorize the name and address of each good producer. You can't trust region names, AVAs, etc. Nothing is safe. Even the varietal name tells you nothing because significant amounts of blending are allowed and high tech "grape concentrates" like mega purple allow wine makers to only do a 0.5% addition by volume which behaves more like a 50% blend of something else.

this is only minorly true and is really more of a caveat emptor about bad players.

there is a lot of work done by good wine makers out there to ensure quality and reputation and value. No one calls a cab a cab unless it is a cab. every thing else is called a RED or a blend. or a WHITE and not a pinot grigio etc. many us/cali wine makers will tell you the blend percentages and AVAs have rules and laws which govern the use of their names on labels.

winemakers tend to be blenders (historically french negociants were blenders) but there are many that have an interest and affection for singular grapes from singular places which gives rise to the minimal/terroir approach of a single varietal.

>> No.14043920

>>14043698
of course there are good wines in california but the point is you have to know EXACTLY who they are

california "cab" is actually allowed to be blended, the idea that "a cab is a cab is a cab" is crazy, where are you getting this?

lastly, mega purple is in widespread use, even with supposedly "fancy" wineries. it may not be as obvious as with the latest orin swift meme wine but it's technically "grapes" so people are allowed to do whatever they want

>> No.14044128

>>14043920

no shit i said people blend, but most blenders label appropriately, as i clearly said already. did i mention i said that already?

there is much more quality in cali wines than your fear-mongering represents.

>> No.14044147

>>14044128
what "fear mongering"? I'm not afraid of california wine and I'm not suggesting anyone else should be. some people like to be surprised 100% of the time, are you saying that's bad? I like surprises too. within reason, so I don't buy california wine much. but if I'm in the mood to fuck around, sure, why not? it's not like it contains poison. it's just wine even if it's wine I don't enjoy.

yeah no, you've contradicted yourself multiple times because you're anonymous and you think I can't tell it's you. blends aren't blends, oh but only BAD blends are blends, also many honest wine makers exist therefore fraud isn't real.

see the problem with associating yourself with criminals and scammers is that being "one of the good ones" only barely counts in internet arguments, and not for much. people who aren't in the wine industry don't have the time or the money to buy one bottle of every single wine made in california so they can make their own private database of which ones are ok and which aren't . even rich people can't do that, that's why 100-point wine rating mags are all the rage for california wine drinkers. because you need someone to tell you what's good out there, it's not enough to trust the words, because nothing stops someone from lying.

tl;dr california is the 4chan of wine

Try again, moom moom. It's embarrassing that you fall so hard into this cargo cultist mentality of 'act like rich people, consume rich people product, rich will happen to me.'

You're projecting again, ron. I've never encountered more pretentious, stuck up faux-posh nonsense than a california tasting room. And then there's the wine shops. Look for anything that isn't a booze and oak bomb from the latest Parker list and they'll glare at you like you're about to pull out a gun and empty the cash register.

Yeah I've had this conversation with boombooms before. Then I name then and they go oh well those weren't the REAL california tasting rooms.

You do the same shit with your horrid ''''wine''''

>Oh THIS one is actually good though, they used 5% whole cluster and only 98% new oak, very OLD WORLD (sic)

Yeah no, fool me once shame on you fool me twice they can't get fooled again, as bush once said

you've had some very strange experiences that dont correlate with anyone else's experiences
its like you signed up to eat ass and then bitch abut the taste and not getting a reach around
if you had any experience beyond your pathetic anecdotes youd die of shame from these posts
youre literally having an argument against talking points that no one has brought up or even slightly referenced
no real reason to talk to you
