How often does it happen to you that you spend hours making an interesting dish and you enjoy it but once you're finished you realise it wasn't really worth all the effort?

I got into bento and he'd bitch that it wasn't enough food for him and that his friends made fun of his "weeb lunch".

not as salty as his microwave meals these days! Haha! Nah, but srsly, there are some meals that are too much effort to make and I wouldn't bother making them again. Soup Dumplings, for example. Pho is another one. It's just easier and cheaper in the long run to order it from another place instead of spending 10+ hours baby sitting a stock pot of broth.

I haven't tried any really ambitious slow cooked meals, but my friend who used to be a chef agrees that it's not worth it most of the time when you can order it in.

I think things like bento are probably fine if you do meal prep. Getting it all done at once in one huge batch is fine, cooking all of those things individually every day is not.

any time a meal is a combination of difficult, involved and lengthy. i don't mind it just being lengthy, like chucking a bunch of shit into the oven for a roast or into a pot for a stock. but if it's something i have to keep adding to or change the methods for over the course of hours, i can't be assed. it's also why i hate making pastries of any kind.
