Have you ever been to a Michelin starred restaurant? What's the experience like?

>> No.14000499

We to Konda in Tokyo, it was a bit of a disapointment. The staff was nice and the chef Kanda himself was behind the bar, cooking. The food is good but not good enough, as there are big diferences between the different dishes. The tuna sushi was amazing and the meat was really good. The dessert, for example, was very simple, just an ice cream and some mochis. And the drinks were really good but the service was messy, maybe because in Europe we are used to pair the food with the drinks. And, bad detail, drinks were not included in the prize although everything we drank was delicious. So, yes, it was a great experience but we expected a little more. Everything is about expectations.

Gemany something called Öschberghof. we were invited by rich relatives. the food was ridiculously tasty and the meat was so tender. never eaten something like that.

the problem was that we were completely out of place. i was on my best behavior but all those regulate etiquette confused me and i felt weird the hole experience.

Ive been to a few, food is really fucking nice of course and the wine pairing is fenomenal. I like the kind of food that they serve but some of my friends rather go to a nice ala carte place. Very exensive though so its not something that happens often, never paid myself i think always work or for my birthday.

Went to a place that I thought was just a street stall but later turned out to be Michelin starred in Bangkok. Raan Jay Fai. I saw a huge line of people waiting to get food cooked by this little wirey old lady wearing huge goggles and was like, "Alright, let's try it." Shared a crab omelette and some crab curry with my girlfriend. Was really good. Felt strange when I watched a Netflix street food documentary recently and realized I'd accidentally eaten at a Michelin restaurant.

yeah, many times. when i was kid/teenager, my family we always went to italy/france and then visited restaurants every day, ive been in dozen of one-star and one two-star restaurant.

to my take away, in general they're not worth the money. its a cool experience to do once i guess, but if you do it on a regular basis like we its just not worth the money you pay.

best option is really to look for the BIB Gourmand, typicall the food is nearly the same as in one-star restaurants but in a much, MUCH cozier and relaxed atmosphere. Two-stars is just one-star but even more formal. Not really better.

Highly recommend making a road-trip through southern france and basically just looking for BIP gourmand every day.

I've been to a couple. Noma in copenhagen and koks on the Faroe islands. Noma was pretentious as fuck from the get go, you're greeted by the entire restaurant staff standing in a long ass line while you get to your table. while the food was interesting, I wouldn't say it was worth it - I assume it was great at some point, but it feels like they're trying WAY too hard to stay relevant and innovative. It was fun and all, but it felt forced.

Koks was amazing, incredible setting, amazing food, nice and calm yet classy atmosphere, incredible serice. Fresh seafood straight from the water, and very interesting dishes and wine all round. 10/10 would recommend.

My grandfather is hugely into fine dining so as a kid I got to eat at some some of France's best restaurants during our trips to France. For instance for my grandmother's anniversary we'd eat at Taillevent in Paris for the main event. That must have been in 1999, back when they still had 3 stars.

I was still quite young, but I remember a ridiculously attentive staff and huge amounts of excellent food. I've later been told that we spent over 1000 francs(~150 euro) on water alone.

I've been to a lot in New York, three in Chicago, one in Hong Kong, one in Paris, one in Lyon, and one in Strasbourg.

There are a lot of places that good that don't have a star. My answer, and this will sound patronizing but there's no way to say it without sounding that way, is that if you have to ask, you probably can't appreciate it. It will make you uncomfortable and you will feel defensive and ripped off.

If you know and love food and wine, you'll love it.

I have been to a few including 1, 2 and 3 star places. They vary from anywhere between exceptional to disappointing.

Probably one of my biggest disappointments was Le Gavroche. It felt like it had 2 starts just because of its historical significance in British cooking. The actual experience overall was significantly worse than many 1 star places I have visited.

A fair few, but only in the UK. The food is reliably good, but you might have to contend with laboured presentation and/or pretense in general. Also, it usually adds 50-100% to the price (all else equal) if that means anything to you.

The wine is always bad. Always, here.

Yes, I went to Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons once. It was pretty rubbish honestly. The food wasn't amazing, I've legitimately had better in pubs, the service was beyond pretentious (I've been to state dinners with less bells and whistles and airs) and the whole thing was basically a novelty. Awful place altogether. I'd actively talk anyone out of going there.

I've been to Alinea in Chicago when it was in the Top 10 on San Pellegrino's top 50. It's worth the price for sure, but you need to approach it differently than normal dining. It's not just about taste. The timing, presentation, smells, texture, service, and just the general atmosphere are all set up for the best possible experience. It's an experience to try once, for me it made me fall in love with fine dining and I still draw inspiration from it when cooking and that was close to 8 years ago.

I've been to quite a few 'celeb' chef places. Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Dinner by Heston, Le Gavroche, Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley, Core by Claire Smyth. Mixed bag - some excellent, some not so good.

I guess that a lot of 2 and 3 star chefs become quite well known in the UK purely because there arent many of them If you are inclined to watch food/cooking programs then chances are you will know a good handful of the top chefs.

Not OP, but a lot of restaurants will take advantage of you if you can't speak the language and try to push bottled water.

Many places in europe mainly subsist off of tourism, so service industry needs to make as much money as possible. Bottled water is an easy upsell.

>> No.14004065

In Italy, we speak on average of € 250 per person.
Very formal environments (which is pleasant but also somewhat inhibiting), ridiculous portions, very high quality of food and of combination of ingredients.
To be done maybe once in a lifetime if you really have a lot of money, but not more.
I'm from Puglia, and in Puglia you can live sensational culinary experiences based on fish and wine that are perhaps the best in the world with not even € 100.

I thought it was ok, my wife rates it as one of her favourites on the list of places we have been.

Starters were meat fruit - looks amazing and is very nice. I have had better parfait, but it was certainly up there. Roast marrowbone which I loved.

Mains were spiced pigeon with artichokes and duck with smoked fennel. I was a little underwhelmed with the mains and they dont really stand out in my memory.

We ordered 3 desserts. Tipsy cake with spit roast pineapple was simple but deeply satisfying. Chocolate bar with ginger and passionfruit - fine but unremarkable. Taffety Tart which is probably one of the finest desserts I have ever had.

Hard to be that wowed with the place when the mains felt average. The service was a bit rushed and they made no mention of needing the table back at a certain time when booking, but then they essentially forced us to the bar in a not so subtle way almost immediately after dessert for the after dinner chocolates and coffee.

Yeah I went to one that was near Santa Rosa in California. Overall it was pretty meh, very pretentious and the servers wouldn’t stop folding my napkin for me and pulling my seat out every time I went for a piss, overpriced as well. Wasn’t a bad experience but I wouldn’t ever pay for it with my own money that’s for sure. Wait staff at these places pull in tons of fucking money and don’t really have to do any sort of memorizing as the menu is always set. Had a buddy who worked at a Michelin Star restaurant and he often pulled in close to a 100k a year and all he had to do was pamper rich retards.

and be careful of faux-fancy stuff, at least if there's a Michelin star the quality is 100% there, no matter if the price is worth it or not, and you generally have enough to eat. Fake high class just gives you small portions of cheap stuff and charge like a 1 star.

Theres no need to go big or go home. I have been to places and had a lunch menu or small tasting menu and drank tap water. It cost about £50+service per person.

These same places serve tasting menus for £150, serve glasses of wine starting at £10+, and have bottles of wine on the menu that run in to the thousands. If you want that, you can buy it and no doubt it would be really nice. But it doesnt mean going there for a relatively cheap lunch isnt a great experience.

I had an ex girlfriend whose hobby was going to high-end places when she lived on the West Coast. She made it sound like the starred restaurants she went to were the second coming of christ, but she was also incredibly pretentious and superficial, and she never convinced me to go down to NYC or wherever and tried a starred place. She did buy me a birthday dinner at a non-star fancy steakhouse, and I walked out of there feeling deeply uncomfortable that I'd just had a $400 dinner that I was going to shit out the next morning with nothing to show for it.

Yeah but it was a surprise for my birthday. I knew I was going to a somewhat nice restaurant so I got slightly dressed up. And didn't do anything with my ass length hair and extremely unkempt beard. I felt extremely uncomfortable for a little bit when I got there but there's something fun about being completely out of place in fancy restaurants. The food was incredible. I wasn't allowed to look at the price of the bill.
