Good thread.

There are only five instruments I use and recommend
>rice cooker
If you eat rice regularly it's great not to have to watch the rice pot which is often out of synch with other dishes, far from just cooking rice it's also perfect for steaming greens, eggs and sausages and you can make a variety of legitimate one pot meals.
>blender/beater/grinder
Favourite of the 90's, it's great for bread, grinding meat and blending- it legitimately does away with the need for three and they can be bough second hand for basically nothing and often last a lifetimes
If you don't cook from scratch there's no point though,
>flat press grill
If you live alone or don't have gas it does eggs, it's a toaster, it makes grilled sandwiches, grilled meat, grilled vegetables.
A griddled press is not OK.
>mortal and pestle
Single use only, but today most people buy these fucking stale pre-powdered spices that are both expensive and godawful.
Note to white people, spices have grades. No the grade is not on the packet.
If the grade is not on the packet ssume it's the lowest grade.
Many white people will die not knowing what FRESH spice is like.
Buy spices whole, they keep their flavour much better
Buy them from ethnic grocery stores where people who actually care shop
Buy a mortar and pestle.
>soup blender
Allows you to blend soup, saves cooking time, can't be accomplished easily with a vertical blender or mashing tool- also good for things that tend to clog upright blenders like falafel or fibrous vegetables. Can also do away with the need for a pressure cooker for dishes like palak paneer.

Also worthy
>pasta maker
If you literally eat pasta every day and are a stay home mom.
>chapati pan
If you eat flatbread every day or sell street food
>waffle iron
If you eat waffles every day and are a stay at home mom
>vietnamese vegetable peeler
If you need a serrated grater for pumpkin, or frequently need julienne vegetables and grated ginger

Some of us get it.
You couldn't play that today in a cinema, let alone te directors cut.
And yes, it was a legitimate critique of postmodernism that transcended it's shock value- unlike say "the holy mountain" which was just a LSD romp
>>13968429
you can actually use these to set Ice clear and for custards.
Also for opening locks.

You're shaving off huge ammounts of metal from your knife- if you are using super cheap knives I would still use a course stone (or like the bottom of a ceramic cup) to get a rough edge.

>You're shaving off huge ammounts of metal from your knife
Thats why I don't use the carbide for sharpening. I don't think I am ever going to use it on kitchen knives. I have used it for damaged work knifes.
The fine ceramics do however work wonders.

No knife is ever really damaged, unless it is laminated steel- and those go for $4 so you're better off just throwing them out.
Actually I use a $4 laminated steel knife for sushi because it's thin and sushi never makes anything blunt.also laminated knives don't stick to the rice like more porous carbon steel does

You only say that until you think its a good idea to use a shitty pocket knife to cut apart kevlar cables reinforced with glass fiber.
Sure you can sharper it slightly on concrete and metal surfaces, but it won't be sharp enough for proper usage.

Having broken into secure facilities with a used pocket knife I found fishing at the bottom of a river , I make no apologies.

If a blade is poorly ground, it can be re-ground.
If tips are bent or snapped you can re-grind.
The only irreparable damage are stress fractures and cutback.

One of these magic sharpener wheels causes cutback, you literally shave off the blade until your carving knife looks like a jointing knife, your #4 looks like a gutting knife and your square knives look like that retarded butchers knife in ACII

The hardened edge of a blade should extend several millimeters into it, only gross and regular gouging sour remove the hardened cutting edge.
A blade should never be sharpened with anything harder than in.

Anyone who uses "V" sharpeners needs to an hero

>mandolin is worth it
The mandolin is hard to clean, bulky and only useful for making thin shavings of relatively solid but soft vegetables or weak smallgoods.
It is also hard to sharpen, and results in serious injuries when used improperly.

It does nothing special, it is just much faster than a knife on a limited range of tasks.
If you work at a butcher and need to shave smallgoods or cheese there are now better tools.
The only viable application is bulk shaving soft vegetables- if you work at subway.
>performs poorly on hard vegetables like pumpkin and beets
>huge compared to handheld julienne tools
>dangerous compared to 80's style wheel slicers
>hard to justify compared to a wire slicer for potatoes, or an industrial processor on the other extreme

There is nothing this does a knife can't, and it's only superior in a small range of tasks with few bulk applications
I can't see any reason to see one in a home.
