Sorry for taking so long to reply to this.

Personally speaking, no - I'm doing it for fun.

Professionally speaking - the answer is complicated. I did some research into WSET/CSW + CSS/Court of Master Somm exams, and no-one can really agree on whether they're worthwhile for jobs.

Here's what I've figured out:
- In pretty much all cases, all certifications fall under the category of "nice but no guarantee of employment." The exception is more intense shit, like being one of the ~200 master somms in the world, where you get paid six figures to be important.
- In almost all cases, though, certifications seemingly help a lot in getting wine world jobs. I've heard rumors that some wine stores require them, but I haven't verified.
- The Society of Wine Educators is the new, US-based upstart, with WSET and the Court of Master Somms being the old world folks. Even from just putting feelers out, SWE is WAY friendlier and easier to work with.
- The knowledge cross-pollinates. Lots of people do WSET 2 then CSW, or CSW then WSET 2/3.

From a practical perspective, I went for the CSW/CSS this year because it doesn't require a tasting exam. I don't have any issue with those, but COVID has made it extremely unlikely that such exams will be held any time soon. The likelihood that a Pearson exam center opens up seems much more likely in the short term.

How do I into wine? It just seems like such a ballache.

There are too many regions producing too many wines. The same variety in one country taste completely different to that variety from another.

It just feels like unless you become a complete fucking anorak, there is too much to take in. Personally, I find something I like, and then stick with it which is boring. But the alternative seems to be buying a load of shit bottles until I get to one where I think its worth buying again.

I've tried a few cheapish wines and they all just taste sour to me. I don't get the appeal. Maybe that'd change if I tried a good one but I dunno. Seems like it's harder to find good wines as there aren't "known" brands across the globe that always make the same things like in spirits with stuff like WT101 etc.

Exactly. When it comes to white wine, I know I like New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. I go to the supermarket and there are still 10 fucking varieties of just that to choose between, at which point its a guessing game.

There are probably a few decent supermarket wines. But for me to find something close to what id like, id have to do a load of research before going to buy it, and its still a guessing game because there are so many brands from each place that nothing is extensively reviewed online.

I feel like it's way too easy to be overwhelmed by it, but there's no reason to.

What I did:
- Taste a bunch of shit at wineries/tastings
- Decide what I like (varietal, region, etc.)
- Learn a lot about that
- Learn a little bit about the shit I don't like

It's kinda like cocktails - you get a few crowd-pleasers under your belt, have a few favorites, and you're pretty much equipped for life.

There's zero reason to try to master one particular type/year of wine - you have to kinda be OK with the idea that you'll be constantly trying new stuff.

The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits, codified under 27 CFR §5.22(b)(1)(i), states bourbon made for U.S. consumption must be:

Produced in the United States
Made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn
Aged in new, charred oak containers
Distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume)
Entered into the container for aging at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume)
Bottled (like other whiskeys) at 80 proof or more (40% alcohol by volume)
Bourbon has no minimum specified duration for its aging period. Products aged for as little as three months are sold as bourbon. The exception is straight bourbon, which has a minimum aging requirement of two years. In addition, any bourbon aged less than four years must include an age statement on its label.

Bourbon that meets the above requirements, has been aged for a minimum of two years, and does not have added coloring, flavoring, or other spirits may be – but is not required to be – called straight bourbon.

I'm the dude rambling about the CSS/CSW, and I 100% agree with this - I'd honestly never thought about that before.

To put things in perspective, I did a "restock run" of both hard liquor and wine recently. The hard liquor restock run ran me like $200 (~6 bottles), the wine maybe $100 (~6 bottles). Thing is, the liquor "restock run" will easily last me months, whereas the wine run will last me six dinners.

I've got some nice whisky and I've moved more in to a rum as well. Got a reasonable knowledge of beer. I feel like wine is probably the area that I have the least knowledge.

Tastings are good but can be fairly pricey where I am. I did go to a good Chablis tasting not so long ago and had some great wines.

I guess the solution is to drink more.

I have considered this, but still keep buying beer. The prices I pay mean that it normally works out about the same price for beer or whisky.

At supermarket prices a beer costs about £1.50 for the cheaper 'craft' beer up to about £3 for a nicer one. There are 28 measures in a standard UK bottle of whisky. So 28 beers at £1.50 is £42, which is probably about the price of an every day sipping whisky. If I bought 28 of the more expensive craft beers, its about £84 which is about the same price as a more expensive whisky.

I collect bourbon. What do you like? Exceptionally good bottles can be rare, and a lot of people like to flex on the internet to no one's surprise. But buffalo is solid excepting the hype train that makes it hard to find in some locations. Evan's higher end release is good, regular white label is solid. Learn the regs of bourbon, look for distillery, bourbon is remarkably transparent if you know the language. Buy what you can afford and good luck, there's lots of fine bourbon out there for good prices.

I've got a bottle of the 45% single barrel. It's ok. It's got the obvious jack Daniel's flavour but feels like a fuller, richer drink.

Prices they charge are just too high though. The standard single barrel goes for £45 which is just way too much when you look at the quality what else is available at that price point. I picked it up for £25, which to me makes it very good for the price.

I was specifically referring to Poor Man's Pappy, two different Wellers that you could mix together to replicate the taste of the Van Winkle mash. Both bottles needed used to be $25 each and because of that phenomenon they're both impossible to find and over $200 on the secondary market now. Same shit happened when I was first getting into whiskey, I drank regular Buffalo Trace as my go to, and I got recommended Blanton's, then Elmer T Lee when I couldn't find that, then EH Taylor when I couldn't find that, and finally Eagle Rare, which I could find but only at high markups. Kind of a culture shock when I realized how sought after these bottles were.

(I've got Taylor, eagle, Stagg, buffalo and Blanton's on the shelf right now) but i also like heaven and beam, and lots of little houses. Wyoming bib is particularly good, high west is putting out good stuff, stranahans rendered a cinnamon/baking spice bomb that's fantastic. If you can find new riff it's right in a buffalo fan's wheelhouse. Balcones is weird juice, but great aging in Texas. Branch out, there's a wide world out there. In an effort to drink something other than beer but not get smashed drinking straight spirits again, I've been trying whisky highballs. I remember having a bad experience with whisky and soda a few times basically giving me weak whisky flavoured water, but this was great. I used small bottles of soda water to keep them especially fizze and made sure to chill them and the glass before adding ice and the whisky. 1 part whisky to three parts water and I have to say it was delightful. It was full bodied and had great flavour rather than being the weak wet mess I was fearing. I was using a cheap blended whisky, Abrachan from Lidl and I don't think I'd use a single malt in this but for a nice, light cocktail, it worked very well.

i dunno. i wanted to say something like a spicy chocolate. it's pretty earthy with solid barrel notes having been bottled-in-bond. you can hardly taste the ethanol unless you're burping.
it does have a surprisingly sweet nose and sweet hint on the tongue. but the strong whisky base stays strong throughout the entire tasting.
the bite is replaced with a quick and lingering burn.

I don't think fruity or nutty are hallmarks of Irish whiskey at all, especially the former which is a hallmark of Speyside Scotch.
For the above reason, I can't say I rate Redbreast highly at all. It's bang on average compared to most single malt scotch.

Here a craft beer goes for $20 a 6 pack and whiskey goes for $40 for swill or $80 for something nice.
I can be drinking 4 different craft beers for the same price as a nice scotch. The only reason I don't is because I've already tried every beer available to me without buying from breweries directly.

It's very market dependant. People are making recommendations based upon what's available and good value to them. You'd probably have to link a store or at the least state your location to find good recommendations for you.
The last guy that I told this to could get some pretty top shelf whiskys at half of what it costs me, which is why I never would have recommended whatever it was.

Not too long ago, most distilleries had like three expressions, a 12, an 18 and 21 year old. Bigger players like Macallan had 30 year olds for the politicians and movie stars. Now you get all this marketing autism with vikings and shit just to gloss over the fact that they're trying to overcharge you for young whisky.

When it comes to taste it has to be some grain spirit, but those have still a distinct flavour and a hasrh alcohol taste. Also aging makes everything more mellow. Had some 12 year old scotch once that tastet very watery. Don't know the name though. White rums sometimes also have not much of a taste.
