Left it on a hot stove for 20 mins and it clouded the whole apartment with toxic fumes. Now the black finish is burnt off the bottom and this huge spot. Is it kill or is there a way to fix this and re-season that area?

yes

How the fuck do you burn off carbon? Also, it's your fault for buying a meme pan.

It's fine. Get some oil on there asap, and start building it back up. Just do the bottom surface. it'll blend in eventually.

This guy gets it. The pan is fine, just needs to be reseasoned. Google it.

If you're fine with uneven seasoning for awhile until it builds back up, just rub some oil on the bottom and heat it up to season it. Eventually it'll all be back to normal.

If you want it 100% fixed today, sand down the interior and reseason the whole thing, do 4-5 coats of flaxseed oil or similar oil. This will give you a new uniform seasoning in the bottom that isn't discolored or spotty looking for months.

Alright I'll try just using it as normal. Not sure what the black stuff is since it came that way from the factory. Factory pre-season?

Yes. Unless it cracks, it's impossible to permanently ruin a cast iron pan.

>> No.13914380

>>13912880
Worst case scenario the carbon diffused into the iron and you got yourself a steel pan.

>> No.13914451

the seasoning burnt to ash or whatever.
you just have to re season it.
its cast iron, you couldnt ruin it if you tried

Do you not know what cast iron is?

almost reason enough to use a cast iron alone. can safely withstand high heat, distribute it comparatively evenly. have many layers cooked onto it consecutively. all it takes is some very basic do's-and-don't's homework and a scrubdown in the worst case scenario.

most cast iron problems, even the dreaded "I used soap!" tend to boil down to just getting the pan screaming hot and baking on a thin layer of cooking oil. if you keep using your pan regularly you'll hardly notice
