I find that with Straight Bourbon/Rye, you have to make the jump from $30 bottles to $50 bottles.

I buy $50 bottles strictly now, it’s the sweet spot where the quality is through the roof but your not overpaying.

In this category you can taste and smell the craft of Whiskey, I only have two fingers of room temp and neat Straight Bourbon/Rue per night.

A 750ml lasts me 11 days, so $50 is not too much for me.

it is a rich man's thing, but good whiskey is legitimately good. I'm not a rich man, but I worked in a bar that had an above-par whiskey collection, and the owner and GM let me pour for myself once in a while, so I tried all the top-shelf stuff. (blanton's is good but overrated, bookers and stagg are ace. Laphroaig is ace too but takes getting used to)

In the midwest, bottles get decent around $40-50 and you get the best bang for your buck around $80 for scotch. There's lots of truly excellent stuff between $100 and $120. Above $200 you're gonna see diminishing returns. At that point you are indeed just throwing money around for the sake of it. Whiskey up there is often better than $100 whiskey, but not $100+ dollars better.
