people treat alcoholism like it's a binary condition one enters by crossing certain empirical lines. alcoholism is a state of mind. it's not about quantity it's about motivation. I drink only the weekends but my relationship with alcohol is that of an alcoholic, ie characterized by dependency and isolation

Surprisingly based response. This negro is right though, if you have 2 drinks a night you might by definition be a alcoholic, but not if you can give it up or you can skip it if need be

>if you have 2 drinks a night you might by definition be a alcoholic
that's moderate drinking by definition. the concern is that if i start drinking with every meal im just going to start drinking all the time and have more like 8 drinks a day (par for an actual alcoholic).

How does your demeanor change if you don't drink it?

>> No.13885805

Do you want to or do you "need" to? Would you be irritable if you didn't have the drink? Do you have thoughts along the lines of "gee I could use a drink right now"? If the answer to those is yes, you're well into the journey to alcoholism. If you also drink in the evenings in addition to those lunch and dinner drinks you're absolutely an alcoholic by clinical definitions, as even drinking with two meals every day would place you in that category. Try tea or water instead.

I drink straight vodka from pretty much the minute I wake up until I pass out. Having having a drink with dinner is completely normal.

I drink 1 to 2 tall cans at night after work most days. Just mellows the mood and gets me into chill mode. I'm 28, happily married, I have a job. I don't reek, I don't crave and I still hang with friends and pursue my passion aside from my 9 to 5. I wouldn't call myself an alcoholic, but it sure feels that way when the same people always see me buying my cans. But whatever, my life kinda rules in comparison to the people I know.

AA used to have a 13nth step when it was first created- the 13th step was actually recovery.
Now a days it only has 12 steps, and there is no part of the program where a person can have a drink without being an alcoholic.

The 13th step, recovery, was designed to be there once a person has conquered their dependency/addiction to alcohol, and can go back to drinking normally without having problems. I think that the sheer fact that AA doesn't have a step like this is insanity- I believe that you absolutely must bring these kinds of ideas up to your consccious and subconscious brain in order for it to imagine/dream/work towards them in reality. I apologize if that sounds like new-age mumbo jumbo, but all I really mean is that you NEED the vocabulary in order to do things. People MUST have memetic concepts inside their mind in order to be able to access certain thoughts.

so, take this memetic concept, or this thought pump, the 13th step of AA, and realize that ADDICTION and ALCOHOL don't need to have anything to do with each other. Humans addict and withdraw from everything- sleep, hunger, sex, and of course all the normal things. We call it an addictive substance only when it is not used for survival- but I argue that sometimes that's exactly what alcohol is. We have a soul and a mind, and you must treat both of those things very well in order to truly live, and that means that sometimes you absolutely need to have a fucking cake,
and sometimes you need to fucking drink (not everyone obviously) but if you like alcohol, sobriety can be as much an addiction as the alcohol was.

TL:DR
sepperate addiciton and alochol in your memetic vocabulary, look into the 13th of AA that no longer exists,
and then listen to "Coffee, god and ciggerettes." by mischief brew, and you'll understand, and you'll be fine.

not OP... but this is pretty reassuring... I was having 2 - 4 beers daily, always in the evening at around six or seven, but I gave it up for Lent. Easter is in less than a week and I haven't caved... First week, the cravings were there, around six or seven every night, but each week got easier. Been drinking a lot of soda though so I guess I didn't do that much for my health

Ok alcoholic.
How is that moderate drinking "by definition", when two drinks a day is the medical treshold for "at risk of alcoholism" in men?

This is probably right. I go through phases where I can clear a bottle of vodka over two days and do it for two weeks straight, then I just stop and it doesn’t bother me at all. I never need to drink it - I just like to.
