I havent tried that, but i imagine its nice if you can afford it. Its not outrageously priced but I find there are a lot of decent, cheaper Islays available. Plenty of Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg available for a third of the cost. They might not be the 'best' but i think id have a hard time justifying spending three times the amount when something like Ardbeg Uigeadail is already a very decent whisky.

Personally I prefer to get more expensive Speysides/Highland whiskys. I think that the step up in quality from a £50 bottle to a £150 bottle is much better with them than it is with Islays (although thats limited experience).

Please elaborate. Most bourbon is just rebranded MGP, most insincere whiskey experience possible. Seriously the history of bourbon is one of distillers and bottlers mixing product and claiming/labeling spirit they had no hand in producing. That's the whole reason bottled-in-bond came around, because bourbon distillers hardly gave a shit about quality control, let alone pride in their product.

Whereas with single-malt producers, distillers will teaspoon whiskey because they don't want anyone fucking with their product.

7/10 to 10/10 is how most people rate most things.
If you go to an online whisky shop and see something rated 80 points, that's a clear sign it's trash.
Everyone with skin in the game knows to only give positive reviews, and that honestly omitting bad reviews devalues your time so you should lie or rate nothing.

Personally I rate on a more realistic scale
10 - Phenomenal
9 - Favourite
8 - Good value
7 - Solidly above average
6 - Above average
5 - Average
4 - Below Average
3 - Bad
2 - Punishment
1 - Sink.

Good review sites (like the IMDB of old) would normalise peoples scores before adding them to the site wide average.

Yes, and by leaps and bounds.

Rittenhouse is good but not comparable and actually made by the same distillery (Heaven Hill), and Sazerac doesn’t even come close.

The Pikesville is 6yr Straight Rye done to perfection, it’s Unsweetened Licorice with Ripe Blackberries and Honey on the nose, those scents transfer into flavor on the sip but with added Dark Maple Syrup and Oak and Spice finish.

It’s 55% abv and is so dark it looks like Maple Syrup in the bottle, this whiskey is not overly sweet like Bourbon it is very complex.

Give it a go for sure.

The good stuff from the Buffalo Trace collection is fantastic, yeah. Ditto on the good old forester releases, booker's, baker's...but honestly a lot of bourbon, rye, wheat that's built up as some amazing thing just fucking sucks.

"port barrel finished" bourbon oftentimes just tastes worse than something like old crow or evan williams. Just tastes over-oaked and if you're reaching a bit perhaps moreso of dried fruit than some bottom shelf bourbon. they are putting the gimmicks ahead of quality with a lot of this stuff.

My reason for saying that is basically along the lines of the other reply.

Gin is almost always mixed. After youve mixed the gin, its almost pointless having spend £40 on a bottle, when youd barely know the difference between that and a £20 bottle.

For most drinks, mid tier gin is just fine, and actually quite decent. Plenty of gins in the bombay/hendricks/tanq price range that are perfectly drinkable. They hold up well in a gin and tonic or something similar where the gin isnt completely overpowered.

I came to this conclusion having been through quite a few bottles - Monkey 47, The Botanist, Adnams First Rate, Adnams Copper House, Bathtub Gin to name a few. My conclusions was that they are great, and if i was having a martini, i would use an expensive gin. But when it comes to mixing and its 50/50 gin to mixer, middle tier gin is 95% as good for 50% of the price.

Tbh that's not much of upcharge. In leaf land botanist is closing in on $60 whereas you can find tanqueray or beefeater for under 25 if you look.

Your argument seems really odd. If you mix whiskey like that then it doesn't matter either if you have a expensive bottle or not. There is literally nothing different about gin in that aspect. In the most popular gin drinks, G&T, Martini, Negroni, the gin is important. It just sounds like you don't like these and prefer gin & juice or something.

The price on both of those is not justified for me. Sorry im not into bourbon enough to want to hunt those down

There was some other port finished bourbon i had called Isaac bowman something. $65 and kinda unbalanced and sickly sweet. It's too much dawg

Not him but I find the bang for the buck isnt there. In a martini or something similarly gin forward ya sure. But for a negroni? Maybe once in a while but the negroni has a lot of flavors that balanced by gin.same with g and t. Ginnisnt really the star. I'd rather spend extra on nicer tonic desu. And in so.ething like a last word I find a lot of nicer, more nuanced gin gets lost completely and that tanqueray is preferable. Obviously, just my opinion. You just have to decide if it's worth it you personally.

>If you mix whiskey like that then it doesn't matter either if you have a expensive bottle or not.
But no one buying a $40+ bottle of whisky is making many cocktails at home. They buy that to drink it neat. Plus it takes about at least a decade to make a good scotch people are worth paying big bucks for. Gin takes almost no real time compared to that and yet they’re charging the same or more. The botnaicals may be high quality, but why not make your own compound gin? I could probably serve you an expensive store bought gin and a compound one I made myself and you wouldn’t be abke to tell me that one was really worth significantly more than the other. The same doesn’t apply to whisky. Young grain taste like young grain, aged stuff is noticeably different. Expensive gin isn’t worth the price tag unless you’re really drinking it neat most of the time and even then I thinn it would be more rewarding to make your own.

>buy this out of boredom
>initially tastes like toffee, followed by nail polish
>gradually tastes more and more like milk chocolate, until it's just milk chocolate and honey start-to-finish

I was surprised that it's actually decent but 1) it needs to breathe 2) it would be significantly better if it was 10 years old and 3) it has no business being almost 60 bucks

I'm quite fond of this one. It's like Canadian whisky, but without that cloyingly sweet quality that makes so much of it shit.

>Gin is no different
I agree

>The most popular drinks are G&T, Martini, Negroni
So of the three most popular drinks, they are all mixed. Only the martini is more than 50% gin once mixed.

I like these cocktails, and will drink more of them in the summer. I dont advocate using bottom tier gin, but I do think you can use mid tier gin, save a decent amount of money per bottle and get a drink that is almost identical to one with expensive gin. I think that unless its a martini, or you are drinking it neat or on the rocks, you can do just fine on mid tier gin.

Vault was better before it started gaining traction. Now they're more about their fanbase than they are about the content they were making in the first place.

Tribe was good back when it was information + a goofy thing at the end, but it seems to be losing quality as well.

I thought about doing that hipster thing of turning them into flower vases but realized I don't entertain any house guests so why bother. I do keep bottles with shapes I like though.
