What does /ck/ think of NYC/NJ style halal carts?

Lamb over rice with salad and extra tzatziki(white suace), and a can of soda, for $6.

Fucking delicious.

The ones in Philadelphia are pretty good. Probably all struggling to survive with the pandemic.

I do feel bad for people in the food/restaurant business with this going on, but the guys running the carts can make upwards of $100k a year in a good location, at least here in New York. Hoping these fellas are good enough at keeping/saving that money that they can stay comfortable.

The charcoal smoke burns, but damn is it worth it.

>> No.13863374

>>13863338
The licensing fees for that and a decent location likely costs a lot more so just making $100k isn't saying much.

tasty, but kinda disconcerting how there's one every five steps you take in more crowded areas

>> No.13863382

The one I walked buy before the quarantine offered green sauce along with the red and white sauce. What do you guys think it was? Some sort of cilantro sauce?

>> No.13863395

>>13863338
That $100k really isn't close to the takehome pay of the guys personally manning those carts, they're likely making more like $20k if that. They rent those carts at crazy exborbitant rates.

>> No.13863417

>>13863338
There's probably only one company that has all of those carts for rent and that's Sabrett, they also control all of the territories. And old fucks running it likely want to fuck all of the rentors daughters before giving out reasonable territories.

In Philly all the ones I've seen own them.

>> No.13863429

>> No.13863434

Kind of like a taxi medallion, those things are crazy expensive and only a few people own them, they rent them out to others.

>> No.13863437

Yeah a lot that I've heard from are Iranian or Pakistani, some moved down from NYC because it was too crowded there. One councilman cracked down on lunchcarts in his district and people got really mad at him. The rest of the city is pretty laissez-faire with where the carts are permitted.

Halal food must be butchered by a Muslim, similar to how Kosher food is prepared (but in a much less involved ceremony) and it cannot come into contact with non-halal food, not even the packaging. It's not inclusive, it's quite the opposite. It's exclusive to everyone else.

Based

One came near my house for a bit, guess he was looking for a good location but he didn't last a week. On paper it should have been a good location but I guess there's just too much competition with the two plazas and everything else.
Was nice for the week, even though I only bought once. You never see them in my part of brooklyn so it was kinda crazy to have one on the same block as me. Actually I don't often see them outside of Manhattan period

Those lamb gyros with the sauce are fucking amazing, especially when hammered. It’s ridiculous how you can just walk down a random street in Manhattan at 4 am and find a guy with a cart selling the same shit as everyone else. Super messy though.

Where do they go to the bathroom? Where is the sink to wash their hands?

There is a huge choice of delicious things to enjoy in NYC, halal meat slaughtered to Allah to bless the person eating it? and enjoyed with boxed yellow rice, iceberg and mayonnaise in a squeeze packet? This isn't ever going to be one of them.

Use your phone and eat something better within a block of walking.

Look up green schug/zhug and realize that a lot of mom and pop restaurants make their own hot sauce that is some version of harissa, fresh or dried chilies being pureed (but not fermented), just a fresh personal recipe people make every couple of days at home.

Living in the tri-state now, Toronto carts are so superior. Large thicc dogs for the same price (average in NYC for a slim water weiner is like $5) and a whole assortment of condiments and sauces that you can choose from yourself. That row of carts on Front St W in front of the convention center and near Rogers Center is just mwahh
