Haven't seen or tried it, but that label reminds me of craft beer threads where Europoors cherry pick the cheesiest labels and ask why Americans don't take beer seriously - and I say that as someone who has a bottle of Uigeadail sitting 4 feet away from me.

All the value distilleries and brands all sound the same to me. Can someone list some distilleries that you've had good experiences with? Thanks in advance.

Not had the distillers version. The Laga is probably easier drinking than the Uigeadail, but 54.2% vs the 43%, natural colour and non chill filtered are all really nice to have.

Either way, they are both great drinks and very reasonably priced. I think id have to put quite a lot more money in to find an Islay I liked as much as either of those. And compared to the kind of prices I pay to find a speyside that I enjoy, they are quite cheap.

Absolute whiskey noob here. What to buy in the 20-30€ range if you've never bought whiskey before? I want to start appreciating different kinds of alcohol. Always thought it was just hipsterism/snobbery, but I recently got into wine and coffee and there's an entirely new world of taste experiences there.

And do you consume it cold/with ice, or does that ruin it?

>> No.13793766

>>13793702
Depends where you are and whats available. Id suggest bourbon though (if youve never tried any whiskey). Its more approachable and easier to drink. I like Buffalo Trace - its good enough to drink neat, and its cheap enough to mix.

Drink it however you like it though. When trying something for the first time, to 'appreciate' it, most people will start off with it neat, and then add cold water by the teaspoon. Adding the water can open up different flavours. Different whiskies take different amounts of water. But really, if you enjoy it with a cube of ice, then do that. If you enjoy it with 5 cubes of ice, do that. It might influence what whiskey you decide to buy, but the right way to drink it is however you enjoy it.

It being the day it is, let's talk about Bushmills. I'm out of daily-drink whiskey. Can I get some input from /ck/ on the relative merits of these three versions of Bushmills? And where do you think Bushmills fits in whiskey rankings anyway?

And yes, I live in the land of coronachan, there's no alcohol tax here. My city also cleared their last confirmed case recently so we're free for now though still under limited lock-down protocols. I really just want to talk about whiskey though.

Basing only off what I have experiance with personally.

>Bourbons:
Woodford Reserve
George Dickel
Hancock's Reserve
All of these are very affordable and tasty. There are many many more great bourbons out there but those are just the ones I have experience with.

>Irish Whiskey:
Jameson
Redbreast 12 year
Jameson is a great intro to Irish Whiskey. It's perfectly drinkable and cheap. It'll give you an idea whether you like it or not. Redbreast is pricier but there is also a substantial quality improvement. Single Pot Still is the traditional way to make Irish Whiskey, and that's the style most of the higher quality whiskeys will use. That term probably means fuck all to you right now but I'm too lazy to explain it. Look it up it's like a 5 minute read on Wikipedia. Again, there are a number of great Irish Whiskeys, but those are the two I have experience with.

>Scotch:
Bruichladdich Classic Laddie
This is the only scotch I've ever had and I love it. The thing to remember with Scotch is that there are different regions that vary vastly in flavor.
>pic related
The scotch I've had is from Islay, which is famous for it's very aggressive smokey flavors. I know fuck all about the other regions, but again, Wikipedia is your friend.

Final not about different terms:
>Bourbon must be made in the US and be made with 51% corn and be aged in new charred American oak barrels
>Rye must be made with 51% Rye
>Irish Whiskey must be made in Ireland
>Scotch must be made in Scotland

Styles of Scotch:
>Single Malt, Single Grain, Blended Malt, Blended Grain, Blended Scotch
Read this article to find out the difference: https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/the-scotch-whisky-guide/#:~:text=There%20are%20two%20main%20types,Scotch%2C%20and%20blended%20grain%20Scotch.

Thanks friend. I just got into whisky and went real hard trying everything. Tried laphroaig first and thought it tasted like burnt tires but stubbornly decided i was gonna see what others saw in it.

That list is the order I successfully used to speed-initiate a good friend so we could enjoy the hobby together. Alternatively my recommendation for a beginner is:

>>13793073

Try a double of glenmo 10 to start. All scotch is going to be gross at first because your palate is more attuned to corn from years of only being exposed to Jack. Glenmo is like the vodka of scotch, it'll give you a frame of reference for how decently distilled barley tastes, which all other flavors build on.

On your way home from that bar, buy a bottle of Laphroaig 10. Don't drink anything else except water or milk until you have finished the bottle. Seriously. You won't like it at first, gonna taste like chewing a piece of burnt tire covered in band-aids.

Laphroaig 10 is considered the opposite of a 'beginner' scotch because it's a peaty punch in the face, and most people don't like peat & smoke to start. However, peat and smoke are a huge part of the scotch flavor landscape, even outside of islay. I see lots of newbies dancing around bottle selection or only partially enjoying otherwise great whiskys because they mistakenlh taught themselves early on "I don't like peat, it tastes like medicine".

Dark craft beers taste like medicine at first too, but with some patience, you find out they frequently have the most interesting flavor profiles.

Despite the guise of a reviewer, they're not actually interested in helping you form an opinion on any specific product.
There are people out there that will be fooled. There are certainly enough amateurs out there who are exclusively reviewing their favourites, thereby only offering positive reviews, that it masks whole market shilling like this.

other way around friend. Port Charlotte is a distillery that shut down in 1929.

on a related note, the port charlotte line is apparently aged in the original stone PC warehouse. I know still character and barrel character have a huge impact on flavor, but does the building have much of an impact? I hear lots of aficionados claim that it does, but I feel like that's not really true aside from maaaaybe the general temperature of the building.

The alignment of the stars affects flavour, presumably the ghost of the old building too.
But seriously, the mechanisms behind what actions influence what flavour in what way are poorly understood so distillers usually take a try everything or never touch anything approach.

I tried Port Charlotte 10 and found it lacking the complexity of other islays. Nice, but not better than what I'm already drinking.

I recommend getting two or more whiskeys that are wildly different from each other on the spectrum and comparing them (assuming you don't have a budget).

You will hear arguments over team bourbon vs. team scotch, and any response will be biased in favor of one or the other. I myself prefer scotch, because the flavor spectrum is ridiculously varied, whereas bourbon is all grouped together in a tiny part of one quadrant.
However, a good intro bourbon is Woodford Reserve. It is like right on the border between being a budget bourbon and a premium bourbon. Tastes like liquid wood and a cool autumn morning. Very nice.
For scotch, get Glenmorangie 10 and Laphroaig 10, two completely polar opposites. Glenmorangie is basically liquid honey in a bottle, and Laphroaig is more intense, smoky, and basically what old grizzled sea captains drink. Both are great though.

I'm >>13794634 so I'm just coming out the other side of lock-down after two months of enforced hikikomori, I feel like I've been preparing for this my entire life.

Deliveries stopped at the start and then started again after about ten days. It's been two months now and we've settled into the routine, you just go downstairs and out to the front gate to meet the delivery guys and you're fine.

The first ten days, I was drinking (and eating) through reserves of stuff I'd put away, like small-batch gin made locally by a kiwi hotel chef who started a distillery and some English cider that I'd randomly found online. I started in on the fermented horse milk after the cider ran out, it's better than sounds, it's basically drinking yoghurt with 5% alcohol, though if you get the more rustic stuff then it's really sour and I'm not into that. The distilled stuff is a clear spirit with a milky aftertaste that's great in black russians.

The deliveries started up again just after I started running out of imported stuff so I got to restock pretty quickly which was nice. Since then, just been ordering stuff in. My Corryvreckan arrived a few days ago and I'm still trying to decide if I like it or not.

I truly fucking despise people who describe whiskies like this.
16yr is like drinking liquid wood with smoke stirred in. It's delicious, but no, it isn't anything like sitting in a comfortable leather chair in a drawing room while your coolie servant puts another log onto the fire as you await a report from Cathay. Poncery aside, that's not even an aesthetically pleasing description.
