Well, they were traditionally paired with a little boat for the cob of corn too, and the boat had the melted butter, and you could spin the cob in the butter between bites. And, yea, they keep the fingers from getting oily, or transferring germs from fingers to food. There are some fancy sets from all the major china settings of years past, Wedgewood, Pftaltzgraff, matching platters or bakers, even baby salt and pepper shakers so each person got their own little handy set.
