this particular one was aged in french and italy wine casks (some whisky anoraks found the wines were beaujolais nouveau , if that make sance) anyway, this shit is reall good. can't compare it with 12yo Bunna, not better, not worse, just a lit bit different (12yo uses sherry casks, and this red one is 3-5 year younger), and some how reminds me of.. Highland Park 10/12. this is wierd and stupid, but that's how I feel it.

I think the smoky/peaty whiskies are good in that they provide excellent value for money. There are lots of bottles under £50 which are really good. I seem to enjoy young Islays much more than I enjoy young whiskies from else where.

If I was buying a Speyside, I wouldnt normally consider anything below 15 years old as I normally find it too harsh, which inevitably leads to paying more.

can't agree with you mate, some speysiders and highlanders are based af even being NAS, and lots of solid 12 year olders. for example, Tomatin 12 is cheap but absolute killer for your money, and what about Glenfarclas 105? Sherry nuke, and costs twose cheaper then Macallan Sherry or Glendronach's. Dalwhinnie 12 is good too, Glend Grants are awesome, and many more I haven't tried yet. And in the point Im starting to think, age is not that relevant when they use re-re-refilled casks (fucking jews), you can grab 16 yo Tomintoul or 15 yo Tomatin and it sucks (tho cheap anyway) and you can buy some first fill something aged just 7-8 years and this will be great.

> I seem to enjoy young Islays much more than I enjoy young whiskies from else where
thats because peat / ash and all these phenols are fading away with age.

>> No.13739839

>>13739722
There are some good bottles out there. I just feel like there are too many that taste very similar, and completely average. Ive had a lot of cheaper bottles where I feel like I would have been better to just buy Buffalo Trace at half the price.

I've done better sticking to slightly more expensive bottles and buying less often Glendronach 15 and 21, Balvenie 21 Portwood are the kind of whiskys I will buy now. It helps that I dont drink much, so a bottle lasts for a long time, and people will normally buy me cheaper booze as a gift.

I've reached a point where I feel like the only way to get something better is to start chucking more and more money at it though and that isnt really an option. There arent that many surprises out there now unfortunately. I'm finding myself interested in unusual drinks such as Compass Box Affinity which is a blend of whisky and calvados.

I can't decide. I love a good german or zh chz zch czhech(???) wheat beer, it's such a good all-rounder for food, sport, leisure or sauna. Best is a nice isotonic wheat beer after some bicycling, in a Sauna.

Spirited drinks... I'd have to say I most enjoy a good flavored liqueur mixed with a familiar taste, like soft drinks or coffee. I brought back some flavored krupnik from Poland and when I visited Lapland, I mixed hazelnut krupnik with dark roast coffee in a thermos and took to the slopes and god damn it was a nice, full flavor that didn't need anything else, it fit the situation perfectly. Caffeine mixed alcohol is my go-to fucked up route, I love the booze knocking me down while the caffeine keeps lifting my drunker and drunker dumb ass back up by the scruff. The hangover kills me the next day as I'm dry to the bone, but the drunk state I'm in is thrilling.

Another good liqueur mix is cola and amaretto, it's a very sweet dr. pepper-like flavor. Disaronno mixed with zero coke is a go-to in house-parties and picnics.

Gin and tonics are prime in hotel lobbies and fine parties, but once you taste a high quality gin with a high quality tonic and fresh cranberries, you will want no lower quality ever again. Napue gin was a thrill, I liked GTs but I didn't know how much more there is to love when you get a good GT like a well made Napue. Exceptional flavors can be found from pink gins, cucumber GTs and celery GTs, assuming you like cucumber or celery. Pink gin may be girly as fuck, but it beats a bad GT any day.

Seasonal flavors like glögg and mead, one being for winter and one for summer, are something that I can drink for a few weeks straight and have my socks spinning on my feet the whole time before I get bored of them up until the next season, when it's like a surprise to be able to get them again and I can relate to a dog waiting for its owner behind the door. Looking forward to a meady summer.

I'm honestly a flavor chaser with alcohols.

I can't really enjoy whiskeys, rums or vodka spirits straight, kind of a babymouth in that regard, I admit, but I just have not found something that would be in a reasonable price-bracket and come with a smooth enough flavor to really dig enough to do straight. I've tried drinking them gay too, but no dice, they still taste mostly like cock.

I mean, I like egg-liqueurs and cream-liqueurs like you would not believe, but I don't care for candy, cakes, ice-cream or sweets, but you put a bottle of Creme Brulee/Crema Catalana liqueur in front of me and I'll suck that sugary shit up like a human sized ant.

Oh, which reminds me of an absolute treat of a shot, egg-liqueur and chocolate-liqueur. Brought some back from Poland last year and tried a shot of them mixed, it was just like those chocolate-puddings you had as a child, but 20% alcohol! Fucking mint!

Next winter try a mint-choco, by the way.

Then there's ofcourse bitters; in Finland we have this red bitter called Carillo. It tastes like a bittersweet glögg-ish drink as long as you keep chugging it, as soon as you stop chugging, it tastes, or the aftertaste of it is, like vomit. It's one of those drinks you drink to spite those who can't. Taste is described as legendary.

An excellent summer music festival shitshow is jägermeister mixed with smirnoff ice, you'll remember the first and last band that plays once you get going with those.

But best I like on a daily basis is something that reminds me of the degenerate that I am; I sit on the sofa, watch some trash movie, drink bulk beer and eat green olives straight from the jar. There's just an honesty in that combo that makes it so good. It's in all honesty probably my favorite.

that's honestly weird, i've been around the scotch aisle of my liquor stores here in the states for far too long, and i've never seen the price of one of those bottles go over $74.99 (plus tax, i know i keep bringing up the tax, but goddamn does washington state rape me with that 20.5% plus the 10.1% sales here in seattle). maybe they get so much from the up-sell from imported liquor (especially being scotch) in the first place that they figure selling a regular higher-end bottle to the enthusiasts over here at a bit of a discount is still in their interests. because, e.g., no question a bottle of laphroaig 10 is cheaper over there than here.

>>13742191
duly noted... i've never bought laphroaig CS, but i'm not opposed to the concept

>I can't really enjoy whiskeys, rums or vodka spirits straight, kind of a babymouth in that regard, I admit, but I just have not found something that would be in a reasonable price-bracket and come with a smooth enough flavor to really dig enough to do straight.
have you ever considered going for a whisky that ISN'T traditionally "smooth"? i wasn't a big fan of whisky until i found the heavily-peated sorts. and i probably love girly liqueur shit roughly as much as you do.

i've found that i enjoy spectrum: i love the shit that tastes like chocolate or strawberries, and i love the shit that tastes like ash or iodine. all the stuff in between, i can generally do without. the good stuff just "hits" differently, whether it's 20 or 50%. if you've tried them and aren't a fan, fair enough, but i think you'd be remiss not to give a heavily-peated islay like ardbeg or lagavulin a shot before deciding you don't like it. especially in that tundra

That's the most logical thing I've heard all year, damn, I need to try some grittier whiskeys. Got any suggestions?

I bought a 1liter bottle of jack once and I've only used it for marinading, tastes like shit. Jim B's have tasted like sweaty socks in my experience... Maybe been turned off whiskey because of these, aren't these like trash whiskeys anyway?

OH, OH, GALLIANO AND COFFEE, god damn, what a sweet combination, just remembered.

try bulleit rye. its surprisingly smooth and mellow. cheap spirits straight up will always be rough. I dont drink a lot of neat spirits but i like tasting different whiskeys when they're there to find one I like enough to actually buy and drink at home and enjoy

so probably you would absolutely love sherry bomb scotches like Glendronach or Aberlour A'bunadh or Glenfarclas 105 and basically everything what was matured in sherry casks exclusively. also you can try sherry casks Islay whiskys like some of Bowmore, some of Kilchoman and Bunnahabhain

yes, those considered pretty shit, even here where they're from. i'm the amerifag from these posts >>13742213 >>13742170, i'll reiterate my statement that ardbeg 10 is the best bottle of whisky i've had, in my limited experience. i've had more expensive bottles, boring shit like oban 14, just not for me.

maybe useless advice, but for my bit, i'm synesthetic when it comes to taste, especially with alcohol. to me, laphroaig 10 tastes like a deep purple: heavy, medicinal, saline. those might sound like negative characteristics, but they're not, i love the shit. but ardbeg 10 is like a burnt orange, it reminds me of (and i will repeat myself) a cold winter night around a campfire, smoky, a little peppery, even like a sea salt and dark chocolate candy bar with zest. it's my best recommendation for a peat-heavy bottle that won't totally break the bank.

and fair warning, you're probably wondering exactly what "peat" taste like. nobody can tell you, but once you take that first sip, you'll know. trust me, you'll know. after 2-3 drinks, you'll know for certain whether it is or isn't for you.

>>13742291
aberlour a'bunadh has been on my radar for a long-ass time, as have some glenfarclas bottles... not gonna lie, i'm mainly just a quasi-cheapo and go for the shit i know i love instead.

pretty good choice for you first scotch. HP12 is slightly smoky, just a gentle touch. it's full of honey and floral notes, because they make it on Orkney islands, where are fuck ton of heather and heather peat, but this scotch isn't peaty anyway, Ballantines Finest blend is actually more peaty btw. and compare these two is like.. like compare the lowest tier grape soda with finest tropical nectar, or soggi old twat with a nicest young pussy.

100% depends of particular vodka and whisky. if vodka's range isnt that huge, but the whisk(e)y one is vast and humongous from vapor tier shit to the smoothest malts you can ever get. have a try some triple distilled irish single malts fren.
