Why do people say The United States has bad food? It's gigantic and has states bigger than most countries. And it's a melting pot of cultures.

Who doesn't like Fresh fish or shellfish or gator or the other endless animals from the massive great lakes all over. Or the fresh seafood from the Atlantic and Pacific or the Gulf of Mexico?
What about Maine Lobsters?
What about fresh authentic New York or Chicago pizza?
Or the many smoked and BBQ meats with unique sauces and preparations from Kansas City, Texas, Memphis, North Carolina?
What about Southern Soul Foods?
Or the vast thousands of acres of land of many different crops and farm animals in the different regions with unique weather?

The problem isn't our top tier, which is generally pretty competitive with most other countries (because we import chefs from them all). The problem is the diet of our average person, which is abhorrent processed garbage injected full of corn syrup. 40% of the country is obese for a reason.
If you take the average (non-Anglo) Euro diet for a week and compare it to the average American diet for a week, there is an enormous difference in portion sizes, sugar content, servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, and just quality of food they choose. When I lived in France, real cheese and fresh bread and raw produce were not just more affordable, they were more normalized. Every average person I knew bought all of this every day, but they're viewed as pretentious luxury items by the typical American.
I genuinely don't know how to fix our dependence on sugar. Maybe if we stop subsidizing the corn industry so much, but the generations alive now might be too hooked.
