Do you tip for a Togo order that involves you picking it up yourself? The cooks have wages, and the server or person at the register isn’t waiting on you, providing beverage or anything.

If they actually asked if there was something they could improve on, I really don't see the problem. It's not like the customer was accosted. It was also probably the manager that asked, not the server. It's important to get that feedback if you're a business. If something is not working, they need to know so they can improve. I feel shitty for waiters because often that's just the job available to college age kids and they get stuck in this loop of bad bosses not paying min-wage and extremely online tards thinking that's somehow the fault of the servers. I tip because I know it's not the fault of the waitstaff and their bosses are shit.

That being said, I don't blame this couple for not coming back. Now that the waitstaff knows they're not getting any tips from these people, the food quality for them is going to plummet. Ideally you tip for a service, like waiting or getting a hair cut. Though it seems most locally owned food businesses have an option for tips. I think they then divide that amount between all the employees. Sometimes I tip a buck, but it shouldn't really be a big deal. It helps the business a bit more. I was deeply against tipping until I gor a delivery job. Tipping cured me of my antisocial behavior, and it's clear as day when a person isn't going to tip. You can see it in the life that they live. It is always obvious. If you dom't tip, you suffer in many ways in your life. If everyone tipped everybody for everything you could always get yourself a sandwich. It makes both parties feel better. That's simply the point. It's in fact so satisfactory and keeps me so stress free having this constant stream of polite behaviors in my direction that my life has improved in so many ways. I'm finally realizing a lot of my own personal goals. Tipping was theraputic. Society had left me poisoned and angry before then.

these type of things are always bullshit. the tweet implies that they didn't directly ask about tips but instead just tried to be helpful and ask how the service was. in the review, the customer CLEARLY knows the the comment was about tipping. the tweeter is obviously being disingenuous about the conversation. even then, the review is pretty much true. they said the service and food were good, but that the server very boldly asking about tipping was a turn off. seems pretty generous of them not to use the opportunity to shit talk like "the food was always trash here anyway"

tipping is one of those things you should definitely do, but it's extremely distasteful to discuss. customers shouldn't make comments like "the service was great, i'm giving you a big tip!", that's awkward even if they mean it as a compliment. even more so, the restaurant shouldn't bitch about it, especially if it's a regular customer. server should unironically be fired.

the custom is pretty weird. you tip at a sit down full service restaurant, you don't tip at a restaurant where you order at a counter even if they then bring the food out to you when its ready. always tip for food delivery to your house. restaurants have gotten jewish and now basically any credit card receipt has a line for a tip to be added even if you drove to a restaurant and waited in line for take out, but nobody with any self respect tips for food unless it's full service/waiter experience.

only exception to this is a bar, where it's customary to tip even if you have to walk up to the bar, wait for a drink, and then take it back to your seat yourself. even if they're literally just pulling a lever on the beer draft spout and not making you some fancy cocktail, you're expected to tip, it's pretty bullshit. some people tip at coffee shops too, but i don't, shit is expensive enough, especially if it's some big corporate chain like starbucks.

you're also supposed to tip some non-food stuff. tipping for a hair cut and tipping for movers (like the guys who load/unload your shit on a moving truck) are probably the most common. some people tip like a plumber or other types of maintenance people, but I think that's less expected

yes it's retarded, no the rules don't make any sense beyond "everyone tips here, they expect a tip, you're a jerk if you don't tip". on the bright side, if you don't care about being a jerk, shit is pretty cheap

>> No.13616623

>>13616601
i agree that it is unfortunate. you only "have to" tip food service workers. you "can tip" literally anyone if you like how they work and want them to give you preferential treatment. outside of restaurants, it's effectively a bribe.
tip your barber so he takes extra time on your haircut. tip the bartender so he takes your drink order before anyone else's. tip the valet so he takes care of your car.

in food service, "we" are fucked because of the choices restaurant owners made around a century ago. the only way it could be fixed would be an entire systemic change-- that is to say i do not think it will ever be fixed.
restaurant owners would have to decide to pay their workers full wages, and instruct customers to only tip if they want to. more often than not, waiters would not want this, because in busy restaurants they often make substantially more than minimum wage through tips.

The only way tipping would make sense (the way our current capitalist system works) is if waiters/waitresses were literally freelance and required not being employed at the restaurant, and therefore the people “serving” you were only being paid by you (the customer).
Because that’s not how shit works, the cost of employment should be covered by the employer, and since the customer is not the employer, the idea of a customer contributing towards wages (beyond actually paying for services rendered) is absolutely ridiculous. The unfortunate part of this is that, to compensate for having to pay more for employees, the employer would either have to hire less employees (increase in unemployment AND shittier service), or simply charge people more money for the food.
This is, of course, assuming the profits are relatively low and the people at the top of the ladder aren’t making money hand over foot, but typically they are, so realistically all that would be required is to actually pay the workers the appropriate wage. Unfortunately, when there’s a state minimum, this destroys all senses of “supply/demand” in the free market and completely upsets any natural order that could possibly exist within businesses.

you guys need to understand tipping is a self regulating system, it rewards people who tip well and incentivizes good service in return based off perceived compensation. There is no hard minimum, but it's a standard courtesy to leave a tip for good service, and a better tip for outstanding service.

Why? Because it enforces the feedback loop. Good service stays good because the incentive never goes away, the employee is always going to work for the tip which benefits both parties because the employee eventually works his way up to making bigger tips and really cashing out. It's a win win.

Also I can't tell you how many times I've dined abroad and just been totally appalled at the amount of time I had to wait to see a waiter or staff member. Yes I've had good service some places but a lot of places I felt abandoned at my table. I gladly left zero tip, they clearly didn't deserve anything.

Now some may not prefer to be annoyed and would rather just play a flat fee regardless, but that is simply not how it works here. These jobs are low skill as it is, by keeping them tip restricted, they shift the burden of performance from the company to the employee. This is a benefit to both the employee and the company because it allows both to control their own destiny. If the employees provides good service, he will get tipped accordingly, which will result in the customer coming back which rewards the company owner.

It's just the most logical system. People hate it because they don't understand it, and they take personal offense to it when it has a time and a place. Really your parents should have taught you anytime someone does something small for you with their hands, like bring your bags up to your room, park your car, clean your shoes, cut your hair, rub your dick, you tip them. It's just the bare minimum if we are trying to be polite.

I hope everyone understands now and has a better idea of why the tipping system is superior and still exists.

By issuing a “minimum wage” you are destroying the natural order of waiters/waitresses being paid dog shit so that they actually work for their money. If you implemented the same system you described at every business, performance would skyrocket across the board. You’re essentially describing why laissez-faire economics WORK, and it even points to the ideas of why our shitty socialist-modulated-capitalism is lending to poor performance in work places across the country.

the people at mcdonalds hq are doing fine, but the individual restaurants have razor thin margins that aren't that profitable for the owner. i don't know about "real" fine dining restaurants with waiters and shit, but the average owner of a fastfood franchise only makes like 50k/year. i find it hard to believe a fastfood restaurant with a constant stream of people all day using the absolute cheapest possible food is doing much better than your average "nice" restaurant that is only even remotely busy friday/saturday nights and has to deal with purveyors/rent in a swanky part of town/a couple employees making way above minimum wage like the GM, chef, and bartender/etc.

besides, in my experience, people 99% of the time stick to 15-20% tip regardless of service. unless the server is straight up rude, most people i know don't stiff a waiter, even if they aren't the most attentive or are pretty slow. like-wise, i don't think i've ever been in a situation where me or someone i was eating with said "you know, they were pretty fast on the refills, i'm bumping them up to 30% tonight!". tipping is already treated as basically a flat rate that you just throw on every meal, why not just fucking codify it?

There truly is no ideal in our current world concerning true laissez-fair economics, we are consistently bounded by rules and regulations to abide by certain practices that disable the consumer and enable the businesses to do literally whatever they want whenever they want. Sure, there are many regulations that must be followed by the business, but this just supports the enabling of businesses to do what they want whenever a government employee isn’t breathing down their necks, and the government doesn’t have the money to employ that large of a work force.
Truly, all of the rules and regulations surrounding us only make us more complacent in our beliefs that businesses will maintain and abide by moral business practices, but there are many cases and many situations where this is obviously not true. The government has attempted to emulate the idea of an “informed public” in laissez-faire economics by setting up many rules and regulations, but instead set the public up to be ignorant 99% of the time such that many businesses work around the rules and regulations in order to profit more, and unless some watchful eye is able to catch this occurring and bring it to public view, the unethical business practice may not be able to be stopped for many years.

>> No.13617841

The only reason why tipping is STILL a thing is due to boomers with poor business skills that want to be a business owner because that's the american dream.
If they couldn't rely on tipping to provide an adequate service leads them to go out of business it's not some crazy overarching socioeconomic circumstances that are at fault but instead the fact that they can't run a business in the first place. If tipping was abolished you wouldn't see an increase in prices, what you would see is a holocaust of shitty restaurants and food joints. And while the demand for eating out wouldn't change, the few places that can run a place would see an increase in customers and thus due to rising demand they could either raise prices without losing customers or satisfy everyone at the same prices.
In summary tipping culture is the same as bank bailouts.

And in any case, oh poor waiters, how tough they must have it doing the literally easiest job in the whole restaurant and expecting to make bank in tips. What's with the pity party for the easiest "min-wage" job in existance? A job that pays extremely well if you're good at it.

Weird how restaurants in the rest of the world works perfectly fine without tipping, and how servers are pleasant and helpful without having to bribe them to keep the implicit threat of food-fuckery at a minimum. Seems like paying people a regular wage also works to keep them motivated enough to give good service, since they'll get fired if they suck at their job.

Why is it up to the owner? In AnCap I can decide to divest my money to whoever I want. Violating the contract I have formed with the legal entiy that represents the worker outside of your corporate interests and their role in your company is VIOLATING the NAP.

And we all know what that means.

Of course it would be better if they just got paid an appropriate amount in the first place so i dont have to worry about it.

if someone actually takes my order, fills drinks, and is physically present, yeah sure maybe 10-15%
if someone is friendly, makes a personal effort, is nice, or attractive, 20%

anything more than 20% is retarded. if you fuck up my order, don't refill drinks, or forget about my table I am not leaving that 2$ you so desperately need to survive.
