I have a bottle of this one waiting to be opened.

For regular gin there are minimal gains above mid tier. The expensive stuff is a waste of money.

Opinions on Tanqueray no. Ten? I've always had bottom of the barrel gin with tonic. I wanted to give something better a try so I grabbed that and I'm somewhat unimpressed, it tastes really rough when I drink it straight. Am I doing something wrong, should I cool it down more?

It tasted like a quintessential gin that did everything right

>> No.13615375

I'd say there are two distinct categories.

There are the lower strength versions, about 20-30% abv. These are normally sweeter, slightly more viscous. They are more like a liqueur and they are good for sipping neat.

Alternatively there are full strength versions around 40% abv. Its still a full strength spirit so much stronger. Personally I mix these with the appropriate mixer.

>> No.13615390

>>13615200
If you want to drink martinis, sticking around The Botanist price point is worth it. Although The Botanist is one of the best.

If you want gin with other mixers, Gordons or Bombay Sapphire or similar is fine. You will just mix away any of the additional quality in a more expensive gin by the time you add more flavours.

>> No.13615414

>>13615200
martinis really benefit from higher ABV than gordons 40%. Gordons has its place for sours and cheap G&Ts to be sure.

why does bombay sapphire taste better to me when i drink it straight than hendricks?
it's so weird because i love cucumber but for some reason with hendrick's i can taste the alcohol more.

It's okay for it's price. It's a cheap all-rounder with a very classic juniper-forward taste. Great for pretty much any cocktail, nothing you want to necessarily drink neat, but it's not bad.

It seems you have a taste for the more out-of-left-field botanicals. Beefeater is very juniper-heavy, really the quintessential London dry gin. High quality but not adventurous.
