Are San Marzano tomatoes genuinely better? and by better I mean if you were to taste them side by side with a regular can of tomatoes, would you be amazed by the difference?

Wondering if it's worth spending some money ordering them online, or if it's just Italians being retards again

Not better just different. That being said they are my favorite for a general tomato sauce.

Different in what way? sweeter?

They have more intense and sweeter flavor with fewer seeds and acidity than other varieties of tomatoes. They are considered the best possible option for making tomato sauce, but Roma tomatoes are also great canned or fresh when ripe and in season. It depends on how much money you're looking at spending on San Marzano vs what you have available to you. Have you tried buying canned Roma tomatoes?

>> No.13599641

A lot of tomato growers will falsely advertise normal plum or roma tomatoes as "san marzano-style" or some other misleading name.

Look for the DOP seal to make sure they're legit.

They have few seeds and taste pretty good. So they are pretty good to use for sauce.
Apart from that, they are obviously not magical.
They are just tomatoes in the end.

>> No.13599736

They're great for canned in terms of commonly available brands so I always have a can or two of crushed, peeled, diced, etc. But nothing beats fresh that you process yourself.

They have a richer taste in my opinion. Also, you could buy them at your supermarket, no need to order them online.

They're not expensive, why not just find out yourself? Why rely on the opinions of other people?

I respect your desire to be self-sufficient, but I can get a can of tomatoes for like 40 cents, and canning vegetables is like a day project. Time is money and my time is more valuable than that.

No disrespect but my time is worth much more than $50 a day.
I don't mean to disparage people making and keeping their own food.
All I'm saying is that I can make way more than that by just going to work.

if time and money is so valuable to you why do you waste it driving around and overpaying for simple, inexpensive staple goods?

>> No.13600309

I get the cheapest whole canned tomatoes I can find.

As long as they are whole peeled, they will work.

>> No.13600534

It's simple math really.
Heres the scenario.

Let's say it takes me 6 hours to pick, dice, steam, and can $50 worth of tomatoes.
That makes it so that my time spent was worth less than $10 per hour.

Meanwhile if I go to work for 6 hours, I can make like $200, with which I can theoretically buy $50 worth of tomatoes if I wanted to do so, and still have another $150 left.

Sure, that doesn't account for any sense of pleasure in eating what you grow, but thats up to each person to decide if it's worth their time.

Regular old Cento peeled tomatoes are half the price and just as good.

They are only harvested once a year and a certain time of the year. They also are grown in just one particular spot, so they have a distinct taste.
I mean during the summer months you can get same quality from local farms, just choose them when they are in season, and ripe.

They are also less acidic, and sweeter. And carry lots of water content. That's why they are good for poaching meats and stuff when crushed up.
