Stoli, $18

Do you know how many times you need to distill something to make it perfect? 2 times. The first distillation is called "stripping". After stripping you have the 'product' run. When you do that, it's like when petroleum distilleries make diesel, gasoline, kerosene. It all separates in the column by temperature. When you do a very stable column run you end up with Azeotropic alcohol coming out the top. That's 94% ethanol. It basically tastes like nothing with a little vanilla in it. Vanillin is an organic compound with the molecular formula C8H8O3. It is a phenolic aldehyde.

You end up with a few of these after acute distillation.

When I double distill it's FARRRRR better than anything you'll ever taste. It's magic. 94% is white lightning, but it tastes like vanilla. Stripping runs are what we call "low wines" they're shit, but when you put 3 tsp of sodium bicarb on them they're ok, they don't ruin your stomach.

The first two links compare 5 and 3 vodkas, respectively. That's absurd. The huffpost piece isn't even blind.
The Times article tested for "distinctiveness", the exact opposite of what vodka is supposed to be. They're literally looking for it to have a strong aftertaste. One guy even flat out admits the "flavor profiles" might cause problems "when deployed in mixed drinks". Jesus.
All three links just happen to be the first three google results. I bet it's a coincidence.

Go find the BTI blind taste test data on vodka, hundreds of brands tested, all with the goal of finding the ones that don't taste like shit.

If distilling two times is perfect, why does it taste like vanillin? Wouldn't the conclusion be that your distill product contains impurities? The subjective pleasantness of that impurity is irrelevant -- you have impurities. It's not perfect.

it's been a while since I've had it, but my memories of it were as-smooth-a-vodka-as-I've-ever-had (seriously) but with a proper aftertaste with that "spiciness" I associate with rye, if that makes sense. It didn't burn, it didn't taste like ethanol, but you could taste the mash really distinctively and I loved that about it, flavorful would be the word. Again I'd highly recommend it.
