Why are Japanese so autistic about food?

No Americans are autistic about food. Did you see American microwaves? They have a hundred different buttons you can press. In my country, the microwave has no buttons. It has a clock, it looks like a kitchen timer clock, you turn it to the amount of minutes the microwave will run. It also has a little thing to adjust the amount of Watts it runs on.

"Sear" it on a really hot pan with butter and then microwave it for 20s
Or just sear it on a really hot pan with butter
Do you like your bread greasy like on a grilled cheese? If not, maybe dont use a pan. I have an idea: toast it in a toaster for 3 min, then spray your toast with water and then microwave it so the water partly boils off
That probably wont be good either.

The Shoguns retained power for the 250 years they did, with essentially no local extractive base or foreign trade, by strict sumptuary laws to ensure the loyalty of courtiers (who got everything) and provincial samurai (who were at least allowed large amounts of common materials.) Absolutely everything was regulated by social class, from the size of shelves and cabinets to the value of metal allowed in a woman's hairpin.

Merchants were the bottom of the bourgeois pecking order, but also the richest because they were merchants. So they had nothing to spend their money on but getting what they were allowed to own folded a thousand times by a master artisan. Artisans were in the middle, so they rose to prominence by turboautism to begin with and had nothing to spend the money they earned from the merchants on but attempting to train turboautist apprentices as a retirement plan. Rich farmers--meaning landlords--were nominally on top other than samurai (who had strict religious restrictions,) but were broke as shit because the base unit for taxation was bushels of rice to feed the samurai, who were also broke as shit because their salary was paid in said rice.

So the entire urban population had 250 years to get used to spending their money on more and more absurd splurges on labor time, which WASN'T restricted. And then the civil war happened, and while the hicks from the sticks won it they immediately looked at Europe and went "they're going to own us in a decade if we don't have the merchants get us iron for the artisans to turn into rifles and cannon, so we kinda have to let them run the country." So their habits were enshrined as What Proper People Do just as the peasants were allowed to so much as own money for the first time. 150 more years of going on like that's normal, and you've got Taro Tanaka spending $300 on a single-slice toaster.

Like, even for food. If you weren't king shit, you didn't get to eat red meat, period; you couldn't throw a fancy banquet by throwing down for a roast and coating it with expensive spices like Euros did, you had to eat the same damn fish anyone not on a starvation diet got, no spices because imports in general were punishable by death. The only way to make sure you had impressive food was to hire the absolute fucking best fish butcher you could find and make sure every filet was perfectly cut and ocean fresh, and the only way to make that clear was to serve it raw and compete on "fewest guests shitting their guts out the next day".
Let that stew for 400 years--not the fish, you can stew absolute garbage and it'll look and taste the same as otoro--let the idea stew for 400 years and you've got Jiro demanding 300 dorra prusu chip.

Disagree, once you start getting into using your microwave a lot the functions come in handy.

Defrosting options are the most convenient and the microwave asks what im putting and how many poounds in so i dont have to know or remember temperature and times.

The popcorn feature is nice too since it just knows. My other microwave also has a potato button, frozen entree, pizza, beverage etc so it knows to automatically heat it a different way until its close to perfect

I like microwaves with a lot of buttons but when I was younger I would just use the keypad to put in time at the default settings.

Jesus Christ so many idiots that don't even know how microwave works.
Majority of microwaves have two settings :
Time - How long you are wishing to heat up food
Power - which controls how much % of said time is magnetron turned on.

Going as far as getting adjustable wattage should make you rethink your life choices and cooking.

It's a stupid video, it's not a toaster, it's a griddler. Holding moisture in for toast is Stupid 101.
It's meant for buttery garlic bread, grilled cheese, and french toast. Probably could rewarm items crispy and moist like a gyoza or omelets, as well. It's small and meant to be used on a tabletop. Imagine sitting there on your patio or balcony, on your bistro table for 2, drinking your (tea) coffee and reading the news. It's a gadget you can also take to work.
Japanese can live in a TINY homes, very tiny. When you don't have a full kitchen and just some gas operated burner, or you don't have a BBQ grill, it's these textures and flavors you crave.
This is filling a void for whoever will buy it, price be damned. Japanese love their gadgets.
